Job Summary: The Action Center Designer plays an integral role in making the Keeping History Above Water® (KHAW) Action Center and Newport Preservation Center at Rough Point accessible to the public. Working closely with the Rough Point Phase II Project Team, this position is responsible for developing a design and implementation plan for both action centers. This is a project-based position, with up to 20 hours per week (depending on the scheduling needs of the candidate and NRF) for a period of two years, with the possibility of extension. This will be a phased project, with Phase A focusing on designing the exhibition and work spaces, while Phase B will include implementation.

Salary Range: $32.00-$35.00 per hour (commensurate with experience), 401(k) contribution (not a match), sick leave in accordance with Rhode Island Sick and Safe Leave Act, Newport oceanfront location and free on-site parking,
About NRF:
The Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) is a non-profit organization established by philanthropist Doris Duke in 1968 to preserve the architectural and cultural heritage of 18th and 19th century Newport. NRF promotes economic and community restoration through historic preservation initiatives like Keeping History Above Water, which addresses the impact of sea-level rise on the built environment in the wake of climate change, and the Historic Trades Initiative, which harnesses the knowledge of local specialists to train the next generation of preservation craftspeople. About the Action Centers:
· The Keeping History Above Water ® Action Center is a public-facing center for tangible, forward-thinking solutions to the challenges of protecting cultural heritage in the wake of climate change.
· The Newport Preservation Center is a space to explore the legacy of Doris Duke’s impulse to “preserve and restore” the city of Newport and to work towards the future of preservation.
Specific Responsibilities:
Phase A:
· As a member of the Rough Point Phase II Project Team, develop a functional, community-centered design for the action center spaces, including work, research, and exhibition spaces
o Work closely with the Director of Preservation, Director of Engagement, and contracted architectural firm to design a plan of use and layout for each space—including lighting, graphics, and projection installation
o Work closely with the Director of Engagement to develop charrettes for community stakeholders with the goal of supporting community partners
o Work closely with the Director of Facilities on all facility-related projects—including life safety planning
o Work closely with the Director of Preservation, Director of Facilities, and Director of Engagement on a budget for the projects and track the budget
o Develop a timeline for the project (including implementation)
o In conjunction with the Filing Task Force, facilitate the administrative aspects of exhibitions/permanent installations, including project files
Phase B:
· Responsible for helping coordinate contractors, suppliers, graphic designers; onsite installation
· Help maintain the implementation timeline and schedule
o Work closely with Director of Facilities on all facility-related projects—including electrical and systems
o Work closely with Director of Preservation on architectural plans and other preservation-related activities
o Work closely with Director of Engagement & Presidential Initiatives to align plan with NRF interpretation and research
General:
· Follow prescribed safety rules, regulations, and practices
· Perform other related duties as required or directed
Qualifications:
· Evidence of experience working on similar design project
· 2 years’ experience (volunteer experience included) in architecture, museum studies/museum exhibition design, or related field
· Knowledge of best practices and policy development for exhibition spaces
· Detail-oriented, organized, and has the demonstrated ability to work independently
· Experience handling museum and archival objects
· Excellent communications skills; can communicate effectively with folks from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences (colleagues, Board members, and other stakeholders)
· A team player who is capable of collaborating across NRF departments
· Ability to lift and move boxes; carry up to 40 lbs; and safely use a ladder
