JOB DESCRIPTION:

The school counselor is a professional educator with specialized, graduate-level training in counseling and guidance whose primary focus is the developmental needs of all students. Within the framework of a developmental guidance program, the school counselor contributes to the personal growth and intellectual development of young people through:

  • a guidance curriculum that identifies competencies to be attained by all students at various stages of their development and provides activities to help them achieve these competencies;
  • individual planning with students in the areas of educational development, personal/social development, and career development;
  • responsive services which include counseling, consultation, coordination and referral; and
  • program management which consists of activities that establish, maintain and enhance the total comprehensive guidance and counseling program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides a broad range of opportunities for problem solving and skill development to assist the counselee in developing as a total person through individual or group counseling.
  • Delivers a planned, sequential guidance curriculum addressing developmental needs of all students in the school community.
  • Assumes the roles of leader and consultant in the school’s program of student appraisal by gathering and organizing information about the pupil from academic performance, standardized tests and conferences with parents, teachers, and students.
  • Provides students and parents with an understanding of the student as an individual in relation to educational and occupational opportunities for optimal growth and development and to promote self-direction of the students.
  • Assumes the major responsibility in making both in and out of school referrals.
  • Provides placement services for individual students and assists them in making appropriate choices of school subjects and courses of study and in making transitions from one school to another, and school to employment.
  • Holds conferences with parents and acts as a resource person on the growth and development of their children.
  • Acts as a consultant to members of the administrative and teaching staffs to the end that all of the school’s resources are directed toward meeting the needs of individual students.
  • Assumes a role of leadership in determining the need for research, conducting or cooperating in research studies, and discussing research findings with members of the school staff.
  • Seeks current information about his/her profession by attending conferences, workshops, and through professional reading.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience/Requirement: Graduation from an accredited college with an advanced level degree preferred.
