JOB SUMMARY:

Assist students in the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation. Provide Science instruction for middle school students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of: specific curriculum content for subject area. Skilled in: lesson plan development, implementation of learning activities, behavior management, assessment, and teaching to individual student skill levels. Ability to: communicate orally and in writing and build relationships with students, parents, and staff. Ability to communicate with Spanish speaking students and parents preferred. Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum, and experience with talented/gifted and at-risk students. Trained in GLAD or Constructive Meaning and CPS. Successful candidate will have successful teaching experience and have the desire and skills needed to work closely and collaboratively with other middle school core teachers as part of a professional learning community. 

Experience:  Experience preferred but not required.

Education: Completion of a higher education Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in education/teaching.

Certification Required: A valid teaching license issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission valid for middle school with science endorsement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times as designated.
  2. Plan a program of study that meets the interests, needs, and abilities of the students and follow established curriculum as written by the district and the state.
  3. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  4. Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisor.
  5. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent within the limitations of the location and resources provided by the district.
  6. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of the students.
  7. Cooperate with other members of the staff.
  8. Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required.
  9. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  10. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules of the school and district.
  11. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and maintain such records as required by law and district policy.
  12. Take all reasonable precautions to provide for the health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Language Skills: Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language. Ability to write memoranda, correspondence, lesson plans, reports, and student achievement summaries in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy. 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in English. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor(s), staff, students, parents and community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and may be continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee may be required to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Works in a school environment. Able to use a telephone, operate a computer, and use other office equipment. Able to drive to other program sites and meetings.

Requirements:

Demonstrated content knowledge for subjects/courses being taught. Willing to help develop and support school wide programs to improve student performance, behavior, and school climate. Communication skills, knowledge and ability to implement effective teaching practices and maintain a disciplined classroom. Data driven with project based learning strategies. Ability to work as an effective team member, collaborate with other teachers, and maintain positive working relationships with staff, students, and parents.

Classification/Location:

Full-time, Licensed Probationary Teacher at Mountain View Middle School.

Calendar/Benefits:

8 hours per day, 190 days per year starting as soon as possible upon hire. Salary range for 2023-24 $46,642 - $95,909. Newberg School District pays 6% PERS contribution, provides a generous insurance cap, long-term disability and life insurance. Optional Life, AD&D insurance, Short Term Disability, Tax Shelter Annuities, Section 125 health and dependent care accounts, Tuition Reimbursement, Professional Development and Employee Assistance Program through Uprise Behavioral Health also available to all staff.
