JOB SUMMARY:

Direct middle school beginning, intermediate, and advanced band. Jazz Band before/after school, and choir. Assist students in the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation. Seeking a dynamic individual with patience and a passion for teaching music at the middle school level. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of: Must have extensive knowledge of instrumental pedagogy, ability to lead large groups in rehearsal as well as the skills and desire to prepare groups for peer concerts, evening concerts, and performances away from the school. Knowledge of jazz music and running a jazz ensemble desired. Working knowledge of musical performance and performing arts state standards. Skilled in: lesson plan development, implementation of learning activities, behavior management, assessment, and teaching to individual student skill levels. Ability to: The ability to teach courses in addition to band, including choir, general music, and orchestra. Ability to incorporate technology into the music curriculum. Ability and desire to work in a team and support school-wide initiatives. The ability to communicate orally and in writing and build relationships with students, parents, and staff. Ability to communicate with Spanish speaking students and parents preferred.

Experience: A minimum of two to three years of successful experience with middle school band is preferred. Experience in directing band and large and small group ensembles. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. Education: Completion of a higher education bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in education/teaching.

Certification Required: A valid teaching license issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission with a music endorsement for middle school level.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times as designated.
  2. Plan a program of study that meets the interests, needs, and abilities of the students and follow established curriculum as written by the district and the state.
  3. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  4. Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisor.
  5. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent within the limitations of the location and resources provided by the district.
  6. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of the students.
  7. Cooperate with other members of the staff.
  8. Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required.
  9. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  10. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules of the school and district.
  11. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and maintain such records as required by law and district policy.
  12. Take all reasonable precautions to provide for the health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Language Skills: Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language. Ability to write memoranda, correspondence, lesson plans, reports, and student achievement summaries in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy. 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in English. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor(s), staff, students, parents and community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and may be continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee may be required to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Works in a school environment. Able to use a telephone, operate a computer, and use other office equipment. Able to drive to other program sites and meetings.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and work year in accordance with negotiated agreement between licensed teachers and the district.

CLASSIFICATION/LOCATION:

Licensed, probationary, full time position at Mountain View Middle School. 

CALENDAR/BENEFITS:

8 hours per day; 190 day contract in 2023-2024, 2024-2025 TBD; contract starting in August 2024, start date TBD. Position includes 2 days for New Teacher In-Service prior to start date.

Salary range TBD once negotiations for 2024-2025 are complete ($46,642 - $95,909 2023-2024 Salary Range). Newberg Public Schools pays 6% PERS contribution, provides a generous insurance cap, long-term disability, and life insurance. Optional Life, AD&D insurance, Short Term Disability, Tax Shelter Annuities, Section 125 health and dependent care accounts, Tuition Reimbursement, Professional Development and Employee Assistance Program through Uprise Behavioral Health available to all staff. Coaching opportunities are also available.
