New York State Office of the Attorney General is Hiring a Detective Investigator Near New York, NY

Detective Investigator – Environmental Protection Unit – New York City

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking qualified candidates for Detective Investigator positions located in the
Environmental Protection Unit (New York City), within the Investigations Division. Candidates should be hard-
working, self-motivated, and committed to public service on behalf of the people of the State of New York.

Under the direct supervision of the Detective Supervisor of the Environmental Protection Unit, the Detective
Investigators work collaboratively in case-specific investigative teams with Assistant Attorneys General, analysts,
and forensic auditors to conduct highly complex criminal and civil investigations, using the highest level of
professionalism, judgment, and discretion.

Successful candidates will combine traditional investigative experience and skills with strong communication and
interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

Duties performed by investigators may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work collaboratively on case-specific investigative teams with Assistant Attorney Generals, analysts, and
forensic auditors.
  • Assist in the development of investigative plans with the interdisciplinary team, develop leads and
informants, conduct physical and technical surveillance, execute search warrants, appropriately handles,
processes and controls evidence, effect arrests, serve subpoenas, and review relevant reports.
  • Conduct witness, victim, and suspect interviews and prepare comprehensive written reports.
  • Work closely with local, state, federal, and other law enforcement partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have at least ten (10) years of prior law enforcement experience, five (5) of which must have been in
an investigative capacity.
  • Have current NYS basic police academy certification approved by DCJS or the ability to successfully complete
all requirements to obtain NYS basic police academy certification.
  • Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License with ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must possess strong writing, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated success in complex criminal investigations.
  • Proficiency with computers, common word processing applications, use of search engines, investigative

databases, and internet research.

Preferred qualifications, skills and education:

  • Excellent interviewing and interrogation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.
  • Experience in the following areas:

o Conducting complex, long-term investigations.
o Participating in undercover operations, conducting surveillance operations, and in the use of

surveillance technologies.
o Obtaining and executing arrest and search warrants.
o Testifying in grand jury and court proceedings.
o Effectively conducting and managing multiple investigations.
o Investigating financial crimes.
o Investigating public corruption.

  • Cultural competence to understand and effectively respond to cultural differences for the purpose of
involvement in undercover operations and/or otherwise to be inserted into investigations and interactions
with targets across cultures.
  • Experience working on a task force.
  • Established contacts within the law enforcement community in the greater Buffalo area.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Qualifications in addition to those listed above:

  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license and have the ability to drive a motor vehicle.
  • The Public Officer’s Law requires that police officers at the OAG be citizens of the United States and reside in

New York State.

Performance of the duties may require frequent, unscheduled work on evenings and weekends and requires 24/7
availability. This position is in the exempt class, and incumbents serve at the pleasure of the Attorney General. The Hire
Rate for this position is $73,153. Appointments in New York City receive an additional $3,400 location pay.
