New York City Council Member Farah Louis is Hiring a Community Organizer Near Brooklyn, NY

A local New York City Council Member Office seeks a professional, highly motivated, organized, proactive, and detail-oriented individual to serve as a Community Organizer. The candidate will report to the Chief of Staff and will be responsible for overseeing, creating and managing office events, attend and present public meetings on behalf of the Council Member and will be expected to present in a professional manner. The role will require careful attention to detail, strong organizational, communication, public speaking and problem-solving and computer skills—and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and problem-solve. This position assists in building community coalitions, and awareness campaigns, and curates signature office events and programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage outreach efforts to elected official’s offices, community groups, and community boards on a weekly basis;
  • Plan, organize, and lead signature office events and programs, and create opportunities for community events for the district office;
  • Attend community meetings and conduct presentations to provide awareness, update and inform the community on efforts lead by the office;
  • Provide guidance and support to agency responders and other units related to elected official outreach and interactions;
  • Analyze and research current legislative issues impacting the community and coordinate with legislative and budget liaisons for issues affecting constituents
  • Organize rallies, agency walkthroughs, and coordinated efforts with other elected offices and community leaders for advocacy and call-to-action purposes
  • Support legislative and communications team by keeping track of community updates and events, such as shooting responses, new housing opportunities, etc.
  • Maintain and build a database of community leaders and stakeholders in Brooklyn
  • Develop and disseminate outreach tools, such as newsletters and presentations, to augment the ability of external stakeholders to provide information to constituents
  • Lead efforts to create and manage local civic groups, such as block associations, business improvement districts, and merchant associations in each sector of the district
  • Work with communications team to promote outreach and organizing activities through newsletters, email marketing, and social media

Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidates will possess the following education, experience, language abilities, and competencies:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or Associate’s degree with comparable job experience
  • Two years of public service is strongly preferred, e.g., case management, community organizing, advocacy campaign, or nonprofit work experience
  • Prior community engagement experience and ability to manage teams effectively is preferred
  • Previous experience working directly with principals is strongly preferred
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage tasks on simultaneous projects, prioritize, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent attention to details
  • Proficient computer, social media and camera skills
  • Flexibility about work hours, available to work evenings and weekends
  • Kind, compassionate, and empathetic as it relates to the needs of others, especially constituent groups
  • Ability to effectively manage fast-paced and highly stressful environments, build constituent relationships and provide exceptional customer service
  • Excellent written and public speaking abilities
  • Ability to learn and adapt software for office needs
  • Fluency in Spanish and Haitian Creole is a plus

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $30.14 per hour

Expected hours: 20 – 25 per week

Schedule:

  • Evenings as needed
  • Monday to Friday
  • Nights as needed
