Job Description: Pharmacy Technician Instructor

The Organization

Founded in 2017, the New Orleans Career Center (NOCC) is an independent nonprofit focused on career preparation and technical training for five industry sectors: Healthcare, Building Trades, Engineering and Manufacturing, Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management, and Digital Production.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Pharmacy Technician Instructor to join our team and lead our pharmacy technician training program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in pharmacy practice, with expertise in pharmaceutical calculations, medication dispensing procedures, and pharmacy laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure trainees earn the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) industry-based certification and are employment-ready for the job requirements of Pharmacy Technicians at Ochsner Health (see appendix)
  • Deliver the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) curriculum to ensure guidelines and accreditation standards are met.
  • Develop daily lesson plans and instructional resources.
  • Instruct trainees on pharmacy terminology, drug classifications, dosage forms, and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Teach trainees to interpret prescriptions accurately, prepare medication orders, and compound pharmaceutical products.
  • Demonstrate proper procedures effectively for medication dispensing, inventory management, and prescription processing.
  • Deliver hands-on training and guidance to trainees in simulated pharmacy environments.
  • Conduct practical exercises, laboratory sessions, and role-playing activities to reinforce learning objectives.
  • Assess trainee performance routinely through quizzes, exams, practical assessments, and mock pharmacy scenarios. Coordinate certification testing.
  • Offer constructive feedback and support to help trainees improve their pharmacy skills and knowledge.
  • Serve as a mentor for trainees to support successful employment after certification.
  • Stay updated on advancements in pharmacy technology, medication therapies, and regulatory changes. Then, integrate advancements into instruction.
  • Collaborate effectively with other instructors, program coordinators, case managers, and other staff to enhance the effectiveness of training programs and trainee outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders regarding special events, marketing, and additional trainee opportunities.
  • Outfit and maintain a safe and organized training environment, ensuring compliance with NOCC and industry safety standards and regulations. Recommend, purchase, maintain, and catalog supplies and equipment.

Required Skills and Preferred Experience

  • A certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential is required.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy practice, including medication safety, compounding techniques, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage and motivate trainees of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for teaching and mentorship.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to plan and deliver structured educational activities.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy software systems and technology used in pharmacy practice.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional competency through continuing education and professional development.
  • A bachelor's degree in pharmacy or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician Instructor or relevant teaching experience is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. NOCC also offers a competitive benefits package that includes 80% employer-paid health insurance, long- and short-term disability insurance, 401K, ten days of paid time off over NOCC org-wide breaks, and professional development resources and opportunities.

Salary Range $60,000 - $80,000

The process will include an initial screening interview, performance task, in-person interview/visit, and follow-up conversations with NOCC staff, as necessary.

Appendix

Description: Certified Pharmacy Technician at Ochsner Health

This job delivers medications to designated areas under close supervision and according to detailed instructions, policies and procedures. This job refills and maintains automated dispensing machines; prices manual medication orders, inventories and reorders stock in the pharmacy; enters data into a computer system and prints labels as necessary; reviews physician's orders and enters patient medication orders into the pharmacy order entry system; identifies problems with orders and notifies pharmacist or nursing when orders need clarification or to request patient information (i.e. allergies, height, weight) when needed; accurately compounds IV Admixtures and other assigned preparations utilizing aseptic technique and proper pharmaceutical procedures; maintains stock in all assigned areas including the IV room and other pharmacy areas; performs related clerical duties including typing, answering phone, filing and greeting nurses and physicians at the Pharmacy window.

Required - Current Pharmacy Technician Certification issued by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of practice

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Skills to operate standard pharmacy and office equipment
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Job Duties

  • Ensures customer service and teamwork while conducting responsibilities
  • Fills medication orders, charges/credits all medication, stocks, delivers, and inspects assigned areas.
  • Prepares IV admixtures and other extemporaneous compounds and enters TPN orders into the computer system.
  • Maintains competency in professional growth and responsibilities
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.

Medium Work

Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
