New North Citizens' Council, Inc. is Hiring a Peer Counselor Near Springfield, MA

SUMMARY: NNCC is implementing a career exploration program, a mentorship opportunity will be implemented that pairs teenagers & young adults (14-21 years old) with a peer counselor. The Career Exploration Program is an innovative workforce development program that helps students reach their goals in employment readiness, job-shadowing, and academics.

The Peer-to-Peer Mentor helps facilitate social and educational growth in young people to help them strive for more in our current society. The Peer-to-Peer Mentor will motivate, model and be a part of a team of mentors to help support area youth in areas requiring assistance, such as tutoring, academic support, skill-building and social growth. Applicant age requirement (18-25).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify and recruit youth as needed.
  • Ability to develop knowledge of best practices with peers and an ability to develop a rapport with peers
  • Plan and implement program activities that include educational workshops appropriate to program academic goals and age of youth.
  • Able to initiate, make decisions, identify & implement solutions, and required documentation in an appropriate, effective and timely manner.
  • Demonstrates good listening skills by paying attention to and demonstrating understanding of the comments and questions of others.
  • Participates in agency projects.
  • Interacts with all staff and community professionally, effectively and appropriately.
  • Shows awareness of and respect for multicultural, ethnic, race and gender diversity among all individuals involved in the Agency including recipients of services, residents, staff, other agencies, etc.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to visit job sites
  • Will provide mentorship and supervision to youth at their respective job sites
  • Will conduct other tasks as assigned by supervisor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has some supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Must be at least 18 years of age.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) and Bi-Cultural not required. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, parents or employees of an organization.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written and in oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables

in standardized situations.

MENTAL/VISUAL DEMANDS: Flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time. Specific vision abilities required by this position includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Eye-hand coordination required less than 15% of the time.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms; stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, and/or kneel.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

THIS IS A SEASONAL TEMPORARY ROLE.

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 25 per week
