The Highlands Undergraduate Enrichment (HUE) office is responsible for monitoring student retention and overseeing student success efforts at NMHU as well as overseeing the First-Year Experience Learning Communities, which support first-year students in building supportive relationships, applying academic content to real-world situations, integrating learning across the curriculum, and having an enjoyable first-year experience.
Highlands Undergraduate Enrichment Office Mission:
The HUE office serves the NMHU community by developing engaging programs focused on supporting student success through community building and experiential learning.
FYE LC Mission:
The First-Year Experience Learning Communities program serves first-year students by providing an engaging experience focused on supporting student success through community building and experiential learning, as well as supporting personal and academic growth.
General Job Description
Job description may include varied and complex duties involving a high degree of responsibility and judgment. May supervise or regularly lead activities or other student employees. Usually requires considerable training or equivalent experience in a specialized or technical field. Designing graphics; Marketing through social media; Aggregating data; Facilitating groups; Generating admissions; Conduct presentations; Managing confidential information; Utilizing second language proficiency; Maintain regular attendance; and, Perform other job duties as assigned.
Specific Duties
An FYE LC Peer Mentor is a leader who helps ease the transition to college for first-year students by creating a community in which new students feel a sense of belonging and support. In the spring semesters, Peer Mentors organize and lead social and academic events to involve new students in campus life, provide mentoring services, and attend courses that they have previously taken in order to provide tailored tutoring support outside of class. Peer Mentors are role models of the highest caliber who lead new Cowboys and Cowgirls into the fold.
  • Serve as an energetic and enthusiastic mentor to help first-year students succeed at NMHU;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with and provide assistance and support for first-year students (focus on a smooth transition, acclimation, and a sense of belonging);
  • Serve as a resource for students new to the university;
  • Attend assigned sections of 100/200 level courses weekly and take class notes;
  • Plan and facilitate activities with students;
  • Attend training workshops and staff meetings;
  • Participate in and lead office committees and work collaboratively to build PM / Hacienda Team;
  • Hold office/tutoring/mentoring hours to meet with first-year students;
  • Organize and facilitate Hacienda events;
  • Organize and facilitate study groups for students;
  • Meet and collaborate with faculty and advisers;
  • Establish communication channels with first-year students via email, text, social media, etc.;
  • Serve as a positive role model socially, academically, and behaviorally;
  • Maintain records as assigned;
  • Maintain regular attendance;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: College student at NMHU enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours. High school diploma or GED. Experience: Some clerical/office experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred class standing: Classified as sophomore, junior, or senior. Minimum class standing: successfully completed one semester.

Physical Demands
Frequently: Standing, Walking, Bending, Squatting, Kneeling, Repetitive hand motion, Prolonged use of computer. Occasionally: Lifting a minimum of thirty (30) pounds, Climbing.
