New Leaf Energy, Inc. is Hiring a Design Engineering Manager Near Boston, MA

New Leaf Energy is an experienced clean energy developer that partners with landowners, policymakers, and other stakeholders to accelerate the transition to a world powered by renewable energy. We identify high-value sites, work with landowners and local communities to develop them, and partner with long-term asset owners to bring the most impactful clean energy projects to life.
New Leaf Energy is seeking a Design Engineering Manager to join our team.
This position may be filled out of our Lowell, MA, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, or Troy, NY offices. We value in-person collaboration and offer a hybrid work environment. Hybrid employees work in the office at least two out of every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and are free to work from the office or from home on other days.
About the Role
The Design Engineering Manager manages up to eight design engineers to design prospective commercial and utility-scale solar PV, energy storage, and wind projects. The team's outputs are system design, production, and pricing analysis. These are developed in response to the needs of and in collaboration with New Leaf Energy's regional teams, and regional technical leads in particular. Collaboration with civil engineers, interconnection engineers, project developers, and project finance team members is also important.
In this role you will be responsible for ensuring that the team is time-efficient in developing projects in existing verticals, and provide the design engineering expertise to support New Leaf Energy's expansion into new verticals. This role requires a strong focus on resourcing, process management, continuous improvement, and practical problem solving to achieve engineering goals for quality, schedule, and financial results in support of New Leaf Energy's overarching mission and goals.
Position Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Coordinate closely with the regional technical leads and other internal customers to understand key goals and generate an execution plan to develop portfolios successfully;
  • Manage and train a team of design engineers to generate interconnection applications, preliminary designs, performance models, cost estimates, and late stage engineering package;
  • Manage the technical review, risk evaluation, and optimization for projects under design;
  • Ensure effective and efficient collaboration and communication with other teams within New Leaf Energy, recognizing the highly interdisciplinary nature of the design process;
  • Assist in developing and tracking key performance indicators for the design engineering team's success on a recurring basis;
  • Improve tools and process efficiency to achieve operational excellence within the design engineering team;
  • Support the generation of project designs in new markets, including utility-scale solar and storage, and wind projects;
  • Support the design engineering team in focusing on the New Leaf Energy mission and in embodying the company culture. Attract, motivate, and retain highly qualified team members.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • 8 years experience in renewable energy engineering;
  • 2 years experience of engineering or business management;
  • Experience in solar PV engineering is required; additional experience with energy storage or wind engineering is desirable;
  • Demonstrated ability to translate specific goals into action plans and implement them;
  • High level critical problem solving skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience with BlueBeam, AutoCAD, PVSyst, Excel, SmartSheets or similar project management tool;
  • Minimum education requirements: Bachelor's of Science, Engineering.

We use a data-driven and transparent methodology to calibrate compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable, guided by the New Leaf Energy compensation manual, which is available to all employees.
