Job Description
Nevada State College's (NSC) Office of the Provost is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and faculty-oriented leader for the position of Assistant Director of Faculty Development and Diversity. Under the direction of the Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives and Strategy, this position will collaborate with campus offices and faculty constituents to deliver equity-minded professional development programming and initiatives that foster scholarship productivity, leadership development, and career progression to enhance faculty retention. The preferred candidate will have familiarity with faculty hiring, evaluation, promotion and tenure, and a demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion as it applies to faculty recruitment and retention.
The position is funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE grant for a period of three years with an opportunity for institutionalization.
The review of applications will begin in late October and will continue until the position is filled. Direct questions to Gwen Sharp, Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives & Strategy, at gwen.sharp@nsc.edu.
About Full-time Faculty at NSC
NSC employs 119 full-time NSC faculty (lecturers, tenure-track, and tenured), 31% of whom are racial/ethnic minorities (Latinx 11%, 8% Black, 9% Asian; IPEDS, 2021). NSC is a teaching-intensive undergraduate institution where full-time faculty teach four courses per semester (12 units). To support pedagogical development, the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) employs experts in instructional design and accessibility and supports faculty to improve their pedagogy and foster inclusive classrooms. Tenure-track and tenured faculty are also expected to publish (or discipline-specific equivalent) by the time they apply for tenure or promotion. To support scholarship development, the Office of the Provost (under the direction of the Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives) offers the Summer Scholarship Institute (SSI), a six-week program that supports faculty on a variety of scholarship projects including discipline-specific work, creation of course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) curriculum, or the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). The Provost also sponsors an internal Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grant program where faculty can apply for one-time funds to support their scholarship. Relevant policies that affect academic faculty can be found here.
Given NSC's high percentage of untenured faculty, the College seeks to utilize this grant-funded position to address challenges that faculty-especially women and underrepresented minorities-face in meeting expectations required for tenure and promotion. This newly-created position will bolster extant scholarship programming and design new equity-minded initiatives to support increased scholarship productivity, career progression, and retention among our faculty. This position will also collaborate with the NSF ADVANCE Project Team to support implementing and evaluating the grant's proposed faculty equity initiatives.
