Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Develops, organizes and implements high quality YMCA program(s). The Aquatics Director will plan and lead the operations of the aquatics department by developing, organizing and maintaining high quality YMCA programs and ensure proper pool maintenance. The Aquatics Director will also provide leadership, instruction and motivation for aquatics staff in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, as well as provide swim instruction and lifeguarding as necessary. They will create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety, engagement and satisfaction. Finally, they know and exhibit the YMCA Mission through programs that strive for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • One to two years related experience preferred; for example, as an aquatics coordinator or supervisor.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience as a Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor with some supervisory experience preferred.
  • Current Certifications: Lifeguard/CPR/AED and First Aid; Swim Instructor, LGIT, WSIT certifications preferred.
  • Requirements within 30 days of hire include completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; Working with Program Volunteers; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens.
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications (American Red Cross WSI, YMCA YSL, USA Swimming Coach Certification or ASCA Certification) preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of pool maintenance or pool operator certification (Certified Pool Operator or National Swimming Pool Foundation Certified Pool Operator) preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates team members performance. Develops strategies to motivate team members and achieve goals. Ensures records of team members certifications are current and complete.
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Secures and schedules pool facilities. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance. Responsible for regular inspection of equipment and to follow up with maintenance should repairs be needed.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  • Creates and schedules swim classes, water fitness classes, and swim team practices

  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for membership and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Ensures programs are fiscally sound including monitoring accounts receivables for NSF, returned items, and other financial issues and correcting them when needed.

  • all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Keep up with all the YMCA’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow and enforce all relevant Association and Branch policies.
  • Participates in team members meetings and/or related meetings.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  • Provides administrative support to the Director of Operations and program team members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
