Why NHCS?Neighborhood House Charter School (NHCS) is a tuition-free open enrollment charter school for grades K1-12 in Dorchester that is a public alternative to traditional district schools. We serve over 800 students across two campuses predominantly from the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan. We believe in the social emotional well-being of our students and know that a well-coached and supported educator is instrumental in helping our scholars both academically and in their SEL growth. We do not give up on kids. Our expectation is that all of our students thrive at NHCS, graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education on the path to life success. Our educators are partners with our scholars and their families as they embark on this path.What is the Adjustment Counselor role? As an Adjustment Counselor / Social Worker, you care deeply about the success of your scholars and create strong relationships to leverage success both in and out of the classroom. You understand the demands of working with behaviorally challenged scholars and you are excited about understanding an individual scholar’s uniqueness and supporting them to reach their full potential. You take the time to understand the lived experiences of scholars and support them from a holistic perspective. You meet scholars where they are at, highlight their strengths, and help them gain and strengthen skills so they can cope with stress in healthy ways. This position is an exempt, 10-month position at either our Queen St. or Centre St. campus and the hours are Monday – Friday 7:45 a.m. – 4 p.m.Duties and ResponsibilitiesDetermine and maintain therapeutic interventions (via 1:1, small group, and/or push-in) based on individualized student goals and engage in ongoing progress monitoring.Implement Tier 1 and Tier 2 social-emotional learning (SEL) intervention groups and support those implemented by other members of the school and support staff.Complete quarterly IEP, 504 Plan, and intervention counseling progress reports for all students on caseload.In consultation with the Student Support Coordinator, conduct outreach activities that support our students and families including pediatricians, outside counseling agencies, and agencies such as DCF, DMH, etc.Complete Medicaid reimbursement / billing activities as needed for students who receive Grid C support.Participate in special education meetings, dispute resolution meetings, hearings and mediation settlement meetings as needed.Serve as a member of the Student Support Team (SST) and provide pre-referral consultation to classroom teachers, learning specialists, and other school staff regarding student progress, behavior management techniques, and individualized behavior management plans.Conduct Risk Assessments for students who present with self-injurious behavior or express ideation related to hurting themselves or others.Maintain the legal confidentiality and privacy of student information while collaborating with students’ special education or support teams.Maintain compliance with all state and federal regulations as well as local policies in performance of duties.Perform other duties related to this job description as required by the school principal, Director of Student Services, or other members of the administrative or leadership team.Is this You?You are committed to cultivating anti-racist, culturally responsive and restorative practices;You have earned a Master’s degree and carry relevant professional licensure;You believe in a Warm Demanding ethos where the two phrases, “We care about you” and “We have the highest expectations for you” go hand in hand.You are committed to cultivating the social emotional wellbeing of all of our scholars both in and out of the classroom;You will thrive in a community in which all members demonstrate accountability, flexibility, humor, effort, responsibility, respect and hope;You are able to start on Monday, August 12, 2024.Neighborhood House Charter School (NHCS) is committed to being an anti-racist organization. One of the very first charter schools in Massachusetts, NHCS opened its doors in 1995 with 51 students and a bold vision to become a beacon of educational excellence in a city of too many failing schools.
