FT Faculty Native American Studies
QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Master’s Degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Native American Studies or related field. Able to demonstrate knowledge of both the Omaha and Santee Dakota tribal histories, cultures, and customs. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. College teaching experience is preferred as well as a familiarity with the use of technology (online learning management systems, etc.). 
  • The candidate must be able to show evidence of effective leadership and a background of proven success in working with students, administrators, faculty, and both the Omaha and Santee Tribal communities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, and ABILITIES:

Preferred candidates will have proven success in the following: 
  • Master’s degree in Native American Studies or related field. Doctorate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years instructional experience, preferably in a tribal or community college setting.
  • Experience instructing students from minoritized backgrounds, using technology in the classroom and/or for distance learning, and traditional/nontraditional methods of instruction.
  • Candidate should have a high degree of self-direction and motivation, strong inter-personal, written, and oral communication skills. Qualified applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodations.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Full-time faculty have a 12-month contract with a minimum of forty hours per week. This includes activities in three general areas: teaching, service, and research. 
  • Teaching (50% or approximately 20 hours per week)
    • Course instruction, office hours, class preparation, grading, faculty advising, intercampus travel
    • The responsibility extends to teaching up to 9-15 credits of Native American Studies courses per semester. 
  • Research (30% or approximately 10 hours per week)
    • Oversee NICC’s newly developing archives (physical collection and digitization project)
  • Assist in the development of standard operating procedures for NICC Archives, including protocol for donations and requests for access. Once protocols are established, assist with research inquiries from students and community members.
  • Establish and maintain a digital archival space and backup space on NICC servers, as well as a SharePoint backup enabling authorized read-only access to digital archival materials.
  • Collaborate to develop a concrete plan for providing user-friendly, culturally appropriate access to and community-based metadata development of digital language and culture documentation.
  • Digitize and photograph historical documents, archived reports, and other publications to support the mission of NICC and the communities we serve.
  • Upload archival documents and other historical materials into the digital repository.
  • Build and maintain classification systems and finding aids to facilitate access to the collections, and gather knowledgeable community members to engage with, benefit from, and enrich metadata for digital archival materials in a community-based way, ensuring a constant stream of student engagement, Elder engagement and community group engagement with these materials.
  • Service (20% or approximately 10 hours per week)
  • Committees, workshops, community outreach.
  • Chair- Archives Committee.
  • Member- Academic Council, Faculty Senate, Institutional Review Board.
  • Supervise PT Archiving Assistant.
Additional responsibilities include the active involvement in the revitalization of our Omaha and Santee Dakota languages, cultures, and histories, as well as active participation in community cultural events.
