Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). DUTIES:
Schedules personnel and determines work assignments based on scope of practice, competencies, patient needs, and complexity of care.
Supervises psychiatric nursing staff at all NDCS facilities and behavioral health caseworkers at the Reception and Treatment Center (RTC), this includes performance evaluation development and monitoring.
Consults with psychiatry, medical and mental health staff in coordinating individual patient care and treatment plans.
This position reports to the chief of psychiatry and acts as liaison with DON's and medical director, as well as liaison with director of operations.
Involvement in interdisciplinary mental health teams.
Involvement in risk assessment, such as suicide screening.
Reviews applicable policies and medical protocols to ensure alignment across all of NDCS facilities.
Coordinates transfer of patients to ensure continuity of care within and across NDCS facilities. Specific attention is focused on SMI patients transferring to and from mission specific mental health housing.
Develop, implement, monitor and revise standard operating procedures for behavioral health caseworkers and psychiatric nursing staff.
Oversees psychiatric nursing care at all NDCS facilities.
Monitor status of new and emergency patients, including coordination of care for county safekeepers.
Manage the Clozapine REMS program administration; to include frequency of lab monitoring and patient status forms.
Monitors patients receiving medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and coordinates care with chief of psychiatric services.

REQUIREMENTS: A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or authority based on the Nurse Licensure Compact to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska and one year of experience assigning, reviewing, leading, or supervising the work of others.

PREFERRED: Two years experience assigning, reviewing, leading or supervising the work of others. Experience working with psychiatric patients or in an acute/subacute psychiatric facility.

OTHER: Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge of: registered nursing theory and practice; accepted standards of care; policies and procedures governing nursing care; sanitation and infection control standards; planning, providing, and evaluating quality nursing care; Nebraska regulations pertaining to nursing practice, including scope of practice parameters; psychology or another behavioral science; supervision or management techniques, principles.

Skill in: coordinating and providing nursing care; directing nursing service program activities.

Ability to: supervise a shift or program for nursing care; oversee the maintenance of medical records; write administrative reports as required; communicate effectively electronically, telephonically, on paper, or in person; use a computer
