Nazareth University is Hiring a Campus Safety Officer (B Shift TH- Mon 3PM-11PM) Near Rochester, NY

The Campus Safety Officer - B Shift (Thursday – Monday – B Shift 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM) is an essential employee responsible for performing general and varied duty campus safety/security related work in the protection of people and property with the goal of instituting a positive culture of safety across campus. As a university authority, the Campus Safety Officer is charged with enforcement of laws (federal and state) and Nazareth University policies for all of the community. Builds and maintains positive relationships with students, faculty, staff and departments. Maintains order and promotes a positive community relations, tactful diplomacy and customer service within a Department that operates 24 hours a day and in all conditions.

The Campus Safety Officer is the primary first responder to emergencies across campus including, but not limited to, fires and fire alarms, theft, vehicle accidents, missing persons, welfare checks, medical situations, mental health crisis, property damage, and injuries and accidents.

The Campus Safety Officer documents all activities and situations across the University. Documentation includes narratives, witness statements, pictures, and interviews. Performs follow-up documentation and investigation at the direction of the supervisor.

The Campus Safety Officer also provides general support to the department and university. Duties include, but are not limited to, door/room unlocks/locks, issuing parking citations, performing inspections of installed safety and security equipment, vehicle lockouts and jump starts.Work assignments and investigation duties involve various areas covering the entire 150 acre campus on assigned shifts.

Officers must be able to act without direct supervision, and exercise independent judgment, and quick decision making handling critical situations, and emergencies that can impact the university. This position is responsible for adhering to documented Standard Operating Procedures for all functions within the position’s remit. This position is a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Clery Act.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols campus in order to observe, report, and deter suspicious and/or criminal activities, respond to emergencies, document all incidents, and take appropriate actions in line with the laws of New York State and the rules and policies of Nazareth University
  • Responds to and initiates appropriate response procedures in line with Departmental policy for all major emergencies on campus (medical and mental health emergencies, fires/fire alarms, social unrest, auto accidents, etc.).
  • Ensures that all campus buildings are secured and unlocked in accordance with building hours and special requests.
  • Performs all means of assistance as needed including vehicle assists, lockouts, escorts, information requests, transports, etc.).
  • Must complete required Daily Activity Logs, Incident Reports and associated investigations, and Building Inspection Reports, etc.
  • Issues parking/moving violation tickets for motor vehicle infractions on campus.
  • Ensures that all appropriate fire safety codes and regulations are properly adhered to (fire extinguisher inspections, fire drills, building inspections.
  • Observes, reports, initiates corrective action on any hazards/defects in the buildings, roadways, walkways, or any safety or fire safety violations that may pose a security or personal threat to students, faculty, staff or visitors.
  • Provides quality service (defined as friendly, courteous, respectful, and helpful) to students and all other members of the Nazareth University community with whom there is contact, as well as when representing Nazareth University to external organizations and individuals.
  • Understand Campus Safety’s role in helping to promote and support the Nazareth mission of education and create a greater understanding of the department’s specific role within Nazareth.
  • Demonstrates commitment to working in a diverse community by promoting an increased understanding of individual differences and perspectives that will enable workforce cohesiveness.
  • High emphasis placed on professionalism, efficiency and a positive attitude.
  • Annual participation in professional development; focuses on acquiring, improving and applying technological and other skills that are essential to achieving the goals of the university.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all members of the Nazareth community, and outside emergency services.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License with a driving record that meets the standards set by Nazareth University’s defensive driver program and current NYS Security Guard certification/registration.
  • Must obtain CPR/AED, emergency oxygen and first aid training certification cards within 90 days of employment.
  • Must obtain training in Narcan, Crowd Management, Defensive Driving, and driver orientation, Bloodborne pathogens, Campus Security Authority status within 90 days of employment.
  • Additional training requirements include accident/injury response and documentation, investigations, and response to carbon monoxide and oxygen deficient alarms.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential data, as well as high pressure emergency situations.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and delegate as needed.
  • Ability to utilize good judgment to analyze situations accurately, and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to successfully manage interpersonal working relationships.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.

Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills:

  • In order to field the broadest and most diverse applicant pool possible Campus Safety hires based on candidate’s skills set. Specifically Campus Safety focuses on transferable skills and the candidate’s ability to develop them.
  • New York State Security Guard License andValid Driver’s License with a driving record that meets the standards set by Nazareth University’s Defensive Driver program.

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills:

  • 2 years experience in customer service, public safety or equivalent.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May provide oversight for one or more student workers, including graduate assistants.

Equipment to be used:

  • Communication equipment (radio); standard office equipment.

Pay: $15.08 - $20.41 per hour
