Navajo County is Hiring a Code Compliance Officer Near Show Low, AZ

Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty bringing nuisance properties into compliance with zoning ordinances and codes; develops systems for tracking, monitoring and abating code complaints; performs related work as assigned.

  • Conducts site inspections on complaints received to determine if violations of regulations exist; drives to various locations within Navajo County, including remote locations
  • Prepares Notices of Inspection; Stop Work Orders; and violation notification letters; takes photographs and measurements at inspection sites
  • Works resourcefully with residents and property owners to achieve a high level of voluntary compliance. Mediates disputes and negotiates solutions to resolve instances of non-compliance.
  • Identifies and takes action to resolve non-compliance
  • Contacts zoning violators and complainants under challenging circumstances and advises violators and complainants of findings and actions required for compliance
  • Researches property locations, ownership, permit history, and jurisdictional issues in order to determine the appropriate action to take in response to inquiries
  • Develops systems for tracking, monitoring and abating code complaints; prepares and maintains records and reports
  • Assists in the development and coordination of programs or procedures which strengthen education of codes and policy compliance to improve conditions on public and private property.
  • Works with the County Attorney's Office to bring legal action against violators of the County Zoning Ordinance.
  • Assists in representing the County to the Board of Supervisors in code abatement and appeals processes
  • Works with other County departments to enforce ordinances, plans and conditions
  • Participates in update and revision of County Zoning Ordinance
  • Knowledge of the County Zoning Ordinance
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of codes enforcement
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of conflict management
  • Knowledge of researching code compliance best practices and developing concise informational presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Skill in understanding and interpreting ordinances and provide accurate information to the public
  • Skill in conducting inspections and investigations of nuisance code violations.
  • Skill in preparing detailed and accurate records for use in legal procedures.
  • Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.

High School diploma or G.E.D.; Three years' experience in code enforcement; or three years’ experience building and/or zoning inspection or any of the building trades, permitting or compliance inspections or related field; or any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position; AND have a valid driver's license.
