Natural Resources Council of Maine is Hiring a Grassroots Outreach Manager Near Augusta, ME

The Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM) is dedicated to protecting Maine's natural resources, promoting sustainable practices, and supporting Maine’s communities. We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual to join our team as Grassroots Outreach Manager. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful environmental campaigns and make a difference in Maine.
The Grassroots Outreach Manager helps build public support for NRCM and its advocacy campaigns by engaging and mobilizing NRCM members and activists, other organizations, businesses, strategic partners, and other audiences. The Grassroots Outreach Manager will report to the Outreach Director and work collaboratively with the Outreach team and other Advocacy staff to carry out a variety of organizing and mobilizing activities across a range of pending environmental policy issues in Maine.Travel and working after hours are required for this position for occasional evening and weekend events and meetings.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive outreach plans for NRCM’s legislative priorities and current issue campaigns.
  • Develop and engage an active and expanding network of NRCM supporters across our advocacy agenda through events, presentations, and one-on-one conversations.
  • Build community power through in-person and digital relationship-based organizing, especially with priority constituencies and communities and help them make their voices heard through meetings, public hearings, direct communication with decision-makers, and letters-to-the-editor.
  • Lead the strategic mobilization of public and stakeholder support, including communication with key decision-makers, for adoption of environmental protection proposals at the local and state levels.
  • Build an expanding network of strategic relationships with key stakeholders including business, government, and community leaders, and other organizations and individuals who may help advance environmental policies.
  • Working with other Outreach and Advocacy staff, play a lead role in planning and executing outreach events and activities that engage NRCM activists and members, including constituent meetings with legislators, NRCM’s annual State House Action Day, activist trainings, public hearings, and other events. Provide on-the-ground presence for NRCM across Maine, including representing NRCM at tabling and other visibility events.
  • Closely track outreach actions and engagement in NRCM’s databases. Analyze outreach metrics to measure effectiveness of outreach strategies and make recommendations for improvement when needed.
  • Conduct independent research and writing to create factsheets and other informational materials, working with members of the Communications team.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of prior work experience in organizing issue campaigns and/or electoral campaigns; strong outreach, organizing, and public engagement skills, including experience building lasting relationships and supporting leadership development.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including attention to detail, ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and constituencies, including other nonprofits, business leaders, elected officials, community groups, and members of the public.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Experience and comfort with leading, conducting, and facilitating meetings and trainings.
  • Prior experience with online platforms for advocacy and data management, such as the Voter Activation Network (VAN) or Every Action.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to travel and work occasional evening and weekend hours (e.g., for meetings and events).
  • Ability to conduct quick research projects, gathering and organizing information.
  • Strong interest in NRCM’s mission to protect Maine’s environment and knowledge of Maine’s political landscape, communities, and natural resources.

  • Prior experience with event planning and coordination
  • Prior experience with volunteer management
  • Prior experience working on environmental issues
  • Ability to learn policy issues quickly and communicate complex issues in simple and persuasive terms to NRCM members, activists, and the public
