Director of Music Job DescriptionExempt Part TimePosition Description: Nativity Lutheran Church and Preschool seeks a talented, qualified Director of Music to maintain and build a program of both sacred liturgical music and contemporary music for our music ministry and worship services. The Director of Music will practice personal disciplines of the Christian faith and communicate that faith through witness, example, and programming within a Lutheran congregation. This is a pivotal role within our ministry which requires strong leadership and effective communication skills. The Director of Music reports directly to the Pastor and collaborates with the Music Worship Committee.Nativity Lutheran Church and Preschool is a welcoming and inclusive church, a sanctuary for all as followers of Jesus Christ. Education Music Experience • Bachelor’s Degree• 2 years minimum experience in choral conducting preferred• A demonstrated knowledge of sacred traditional and contemporary music repertoire and the liturgical year, ideally with knowledge of Lutheran worship and liturgy. • Experience leading a comprehensive church music program.• Musical leadership requires skills in the following areas: keyboard, voice and conducting. Skills and experience may be required in other areas such as contemporary instrumental ensembles, orchestration, hand bells, children's choirs, composition, praise band, and familiarity with musical styles of various cultures within the community.Character Qualifications • Commitment to the Christian faith and to the church's vision, mission, leadership, and people. • Skill in interpreting and directing a broad range of music styles to offer variety in worship with the ability to teach, led and creatively guide musicians of all ages – including preschool age children• Understands the role of music in enhancing and inspiring congregational worship. • Strong interpersonal relationship skills with adults and youth fostering openness, inclusiveness cooperation.• Ability to build, direct and oversee a comprehensive music ministry • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills • Attributes of confidentiality, integrity, and honestyPurpose:The purpose of Nativity’s music ministry is to proclaim the Gospel and glorify God through Celebration: To enhance worship for the congregation contributing to its Spiritual life through leadership in worship ---hymns, liturgy, anthems, and solos both vocal and instrumental.Education: To expose and enrich the lives of Nativity members and our preschool through music of all varieties/musical expression.Involvement: To seek to grow the music ministry of Nativity through additional people in existing groups as well as looking for opportunities to expand the music offerings.ResponsibilitiesChoral Band Direction, Youth Music, Rehearsing, and Service Leading 1. Oversee and direct all aspects of music ministry to include developing, recruiting, planning, rehearsing, and conducting/leading Nativity choir(s), Praise Band (vocally and/or instrumentally), and Nativity Youth Music (children’s choir). 2. Participate in weekly worship services and all church holiday-related worship services to include the preschool holiday celebrations.3. Recruit, rehearse, and conduct for special musical presentations; typically, twice during the year (Christmas Easter)4. Select appropriate hymns, choral repertoire, and praise worship songs in consultation with the Pastor. 5. Support musical class for preschool and provide musical / technical support for preschool seasonal programs.6. Recruit volunteers for special music (instrument and vocal) to be used on occasion.7. Oversee the recruitment of Music Ministry Interns to support Nativity’s succession plan.8. Acquire a substitute musician when absent.Communication and Personnel 1. Attend and participate in Church Staff and Worship and Music Committee meetings.2. Meet weekly with the Pastor to discuss the design and execution of music and liturgies.3. Consult with families regarding wedding and funeral services, as requested by Pastor. Collaborate with Pastor and families to provide appropriate music.Administration, Publication, and Planning 1. Plan music to fit with the sermon series/Church Season in collaboration with Pastor and/or Music Worship Committee.2. Submit music selections to office for publication in a timely manner3. Oversee the music budget and prioritize funding to meet the needs of the music ministry. Purchase music in accordance with budget guidelines applicable for the choir and respective seasons of the year. Music expenditures shall be reported to the church treasurer and not to exceed the amount provided in the church budget.4. Prepare and communicate rehearsal schedules for all ensembles in a timely manner.5. Communicate any church-wide announcements with the Church Office.6. Coordinate, arrange to provide music, practice, and support Sunday services volunteer Psalmists. Provide list of volunteers to office for publication in newsletter.Maintenance and Resources 1. Oversee upkeep, maintenance, and tuning of all instruments, including the organ; Baby Grand Piano; digital keyboard; and Handbells.2. Competency in church management software (i.e., Pro-presenter) to display lyrics, chord charts and presentation in real time.3. Supervise the organization and inventory of the music library.4. Provide physical and electronic copies of materials for all choir and ensemble members.5. Maintain church’s adherence to copyright laws and licensure, including keeping the church’s license current. Ensure all music remains property of the church.6. Occasional responsible for opening the church before services and be available to lock the church after services on a rotating basis with other staff.Supervision:The Director of Music shall be under the direct supervision of the Pastor in consultation with the Worship and Music Committee. However, all music presentations must be authorized by the Music Director. The Worship and Music Committee shall be the support and sounding board for the Director of Music. The director is also a member of the committee.Compensation: Commensurate with experience and education. The Director of Music is part time and requires flexibility to be onsite an average of 12-20 hours per week depending on operational needs. Weekly responsibilities include Sunday Worship, one evening rehearsal/practice session, and one planning day, increased workload during special events. The Director of Music should demonstrate:• The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time.• Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, hear, and see up close and from afar.• Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation.• Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form.
