Job Description:

The primary responsibility of the Director of Grants and Partnerships is to meet or exceed annual and multi-year financial goals by identifying, cultivating, securing, and stewarding grant opportunities from corporations, public and private foundations, government/state grants, major donors, and community partners. The Director is responsible for the holistic development, planning, design, and implementation of a robust major gift grant program to identify and cultivate new funders and partnerships to increase the overall visibility of PWNA’s programs and generate revenue.

This position will report to the Executive Director of Development and Fundraising and will coordinate activities to support the work and initiatives of the other fundraising channels and team within the organization. The position is key to implementing PWNA’s strategic plan that includes promoting PWNA’s role as an intermediary organization able to leverage existing knowledge, infrastructure, and relationships to bring new resources to Native American communities. Significant responsibilities to include (1) an identification of new, major philanthropic partner prospects focused on foundations, corporations, non-profits, tribes, local businesses, and philanthropists (2) oversee the grants program and supervise the Grant Manager in their duties and functions (3) work closely with the Programs and Finance staff to create synergy and mutual support in identifying, pursuing, and fulfilling funding support to enhance the work and mission of PWNA.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop strategies and implement programs to raise funds from corporations, local businesses, foundations, tribes, other non-profits, government funding sources, and other philanthropies in support of PWNA
  • Identify partnership opportunities with other non-profits, employee resource groups, and associations to leverage resources and assistance to tribes
  • Produce major donor and special category collateral materials with the intent to grow donor base through cultivating major gifts
  • Onboard and supervise the Grants Manager and oversee all grant activities including cultivation, solicitation, tracking and reporting
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Development and Fundraising to support the Fundraising Department’s goals and initiatives and provide support to all other staff in the various fundraising channels
  • Develop and orchestrate strategic approaches to institutional donors
  • Develop, cultivate, nurture and steward relationships with current and potential corporate, non-profit & foundation donors!
  • Engage in research to identify new individual, foundation, and government prospects
  • Review drafts of responses to requests for proposals, grant applications, grant reports and letters of intent in consultation with program and Finance staff created by the Grant Manager
  • Manage PWNA’s participation and membership in relevant associations (National VOAD, local Chambers of Commerce where PWNA has offices, Disaster Coordination Groups, etc.) to leverage PWNA’s expertise as an intermediary and resource
  • Work with Program staff on identifying and cultivating new GIK donors
  • Identify and implement any donor and funder activities and fundraising/awareness events with fundraising and programs staff to engage existing and potential donors and funders
  • Research public and grant sources (foundations, agencies, and corporations) to identify sources of restricted and unrestricted funding.
  • Identify and participate in any training or educational opportunities to increase awareness and skills in fundraising and partnership development.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Related Experience:

Minimum bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university or 10 years related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience and Other Requirements:

  • 7-10 years development and partnership experience in a service industry with a non-profit or corporate giving program
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct Corporation/Fundraising experience
  • Direct experience working in Indian Country helpful and preferred
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of database programs
  • Effective listening, written and oral communication skills including public speaking, presentation abilities, negotiation, and facilitation skills
  • PWNA fundraising staff are expected to ethically generate philanthropic support and are expected to abide ethical standards, principles, and the Donor Bill of Rights in accordance with the American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel (AAFRC)
  • Expressed desire to learn and familiarize oneself with the issues of Indian Country and the philanthropic landscape of Native American issues

  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate and manage new accounts
  • Demonstrated success in securing major and annual gifts from funders
  • Thorough understanding of all components of a varied funding base
  • Possess a high degree of emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and self-awareness.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies
  • Strong partnership-building and collaborative skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and thorough understanding of strategic development
  • Proven management and leadership capabilities
  • Proven track record of achieving revenue targets within a reasonable time frame;
  • Ability to work in a team setting and creating opportunities to build trusted relationships internally and externally
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
