Overview

Provides legal advice and services through the office of General Counsel at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) for the benefit of NCH, its subsidiaries, and related companies. Serves as a consultant, legal advisor, advocate, and defender, in a manner consistent with the mission, values, and strategic objectives of the organization. Joins a team of lawyers providing legal and strategic advice to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Abigail Wexner Research Institute on the wide variety of legal and policy issues encountered by an academic medical center and its research institute.

Responsibilities

• Drafts, reviews, and negotiates agreements with a focus on research and intellectual property, such as clinical trial agreements, material transfer agreements, data use agreements, sponsored research agreements, collaborative research agreements, grant subaward agreements, licensing agreements, and other agreements that support the research operations and technology transfer activities.• Advises in healthcare and research-related matters including regulatory issues in pre-clinical and human subject research, legal review, and analysis with respect to institutional policies, procedures, and processes.• Provides advice on federal and state grant awards and subawards.• Provides advice to and supports the relevant regulatory oversight committees such as the IRB and IACUC and supports their administrative leaders; provides advice in and addresses legal issues relating to export control, undue foreign influence, conflicts of interest, research misconduct, biobanking, data privacy (including GDPR), and international research collaboration issues.• Provides advice on trademark and copyright issues, including registration and enforcement.• Assists with litigation and discovery in disputes related to the research enterprise.• Participates in Hospital committees as deemed appropriate, attends annual Hospital and departmental fire and safety, infection control training, and maintains current knowledge of safety procedures within the Hospital and department.

Qualifications

Education Requirement: Juris Doctorate, required. Undergraduate or graduate degree in the biological sciences, preferred.Licensure Requirement: Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio; attorney in good standing in states where admitted.Skills:• Being detail-oriented and an expert problem solver.• Demonstrates sound judgment, comfortable in ambiguous situations, with the ability to work under pressure with diligence and organization. Excellent listener with strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.• Demonstrates strong analytical skills and counseling skills, judgment, and empathy.• Brings inquisitiveness, enthusiasm, and passion about challenges, and being a team player who can work independently and collaboratively. Experience: Four years’ relevant experience, including, legal support of research activities, or supporting an academic medical center, research institute or university.
