National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is Hiring a Controller Near Washington, DC

 CONTROLLER

Summary

The Controller will assist the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with the financial affairs of the Foundation and with the preparation of financial analyses of operations, including interim and final financial statements with supporting schedules, for the guidance of management. The Controller is responsible for all accounting and bookkeeping management and procedures and for handling all the Foundation’s day-to-day accounting transactions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Controller is responsible for all accounting and bookkeeping management and procedures, and for handling all day-to-day accounting transactions, including:

  • Maintaining efficient, up-to-date accounting, payment, and record systems, with complete and appropriate documentation.
  • Supervise the handling of all day-to-day accounting transactions.
  • Oversight of A/R, A/P, account reconciliations, and general ledger.
  • Preparing financial analyses, monthly balance sheets, cash flow and income and expense statements.
  • Maintaining internal control systems.
  • Oversight of the preparation of Form 990 and other tax/regulatory forms and required reports including correspondence with appropriate tax authorities.
  • Assisting the CFO in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Provide leadership for the Finance and Accounting Department, advising the CFO on matters relating to generally accepted accounting principles, internal control standards, and cost control measures.
  • Preparing reports as requested by the CFO.
  • Coordinate the annual financial statement and A-133 audit activities (interim and final), including preparation and review of audit schedules, working with the auditors and ensuring adherence to agreed timelines.
  • Maintain oversight of payroll – review payroll input and output for completeness and accuracy.
  • Oversee the preparation of invoices to funding sources, and actively monitor aging accounts receivable. Work with the Billing Manager to prevent delinquent A/R and to ensure required management actions are taken.
  • Monitor and enhance the level of service provided by the Finance and Accounting Department to various business units within the Foundation.
  • Maintain the accounting policies and procedures manual.

Month-end Responsibilities

  • Oversee bank, investment, and cash reconciliations.
  • Close out month-end accounting records to general ledger, ensuring adherence to the established month-end closing schedule.
  • Post all journals not handled by Assistant Controller (disbursements, invoices, payroll, and adjusting journal entries).
  • Review monthly financial reports including financial statements (statements of financial position, activities, and cash flows) ensuring agreement to general ledger.
  • Perform all month-end verifications to assure general ledger and supporting journals are in agreement.
  • Perform/coordinate monthly financial analysis i.e. expense and revenue variance analysis. Highlight trends and changes to asset categories, liabilities and net assets.
  • Review and monitor monthly reconciliation and activity schedules. Oversee the quarterly review and reconciliation of cash/investment account balances to fund account balances.
  • Timely follow through on discrepancies, issues and reconciling items, proactively advising the CFO on internal control implications and remedial actions.
  • Consistently look for process improvement opportunities. Ensure approved process changes are documented in the accounting manual and lead implementation efforts.

Annual Responsibilities 

  • Coordinate, prepare for, and oversee annual audit, monitoring year-end closing timetable.
  • Manage year-end closing, annual audit and on-going accounting operations that concurrently take place at the beginning of a new fiscal year.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with all tax and regulatory reporting requirements e.g. preparation of 1099s and W-2s.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and approve accounts payable, i.e., verify that the payables comply with Foundation policy.
  • Prepare grantee projects, program and funding source financial reports as needed.
  • Other tasks and duties assigned by the CFO.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS)

  • Bachelors Degree in Finance or Accounting. CPA required.
  • Ten years relevant experience. Previous experience in public accounting, nonprofit and/or government contracting strongly preferred.
  • Computer proficiency; experience with Deltek Costpoint strongly preferred.
  • Analytical--the individual synthesizes complex or diverse information.
  • Problem solving--the individual identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner and gathers and analyzes information skillfully.
  • Oral communication--the individual speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations, demonstrates group presentation skills and conducts meetings.
  • Delegation--the individual delegates work assignments, gives authority to work independently, sets expectations and monitors delegated activities.
  • Management skills--the individual includes staff in planning, decision-making, facilitating process improvement; makes self available to staff; provides regular performance feedback; and develops subordinates' skills and encourages growth.
  • Quality management-the individual looks for ways to improve and promote quality and demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Judgment--the individual displays willingness to make decisions, exhibits sound and accurate judgment and makes timely decisions.
  • Planning/organizing--the individual prioritizes and plans work activities, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans.
  • Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills, including ability to resolve disputes and observe confidentiality. Positive attitude a must.
  • Previous experience with multi-site, multi-state organizations a plus.
  • Personable, hands-on, motivated self-starter who works well under pressure.
  • Ability to supervise and work with others.
