National Aquarium is Hiring a Manager, Safety & Security Near Baltimore, MD

General Purpose:

Manges the operation of the Security Team, across all three shifts (Day, Evening, and Overnight). Supervises and performs the duties of a Security Officer, and supports other teams within Guest Operations, and the larger organization.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with orientation and training of new Security Team members.
    • Identifies additional training opportunities, and collaborates with Manager of Safety and Risk to acquire any additional training-services.
  • Supervises Security Officers during their assigned shifts.
    • Develops shift-schedules, ensures appropriate coverage on each shift, and approves/denies leave requests.
    • Arranges first-aid coverage for animal-catches and dives.
    • Ensures all post-assignments are covered, and arranges for additional help, as needed.
    • Resolves any interpersonal conflicts within the Security Team.
    • Handles administrative functions (conducts performance-assessments, executes on disciplinary matters, coaches team-members, and identifies additional training needs).
    • Makes termination recommendations, and supports process by completing supporting documentation, as required.
    • Designates shift leads, and insures equitable posting of staff, commensurate with their levels-of-training and experience.
  • Recruits for and hires new Security Team staff.
    • Screens resumes, interviews candidates, and makes hiring recommendations.
    • Completes Personnel Action Request (PAF), collects required signatures, and liaises with Human Resources.
    • Leads orientation and training of new Officers.
  • Reviews timesheets, completes leave-requests, and processes payroll for Security Team.
  • Makes any timekeeping adjustments required because of late- or missed-punches.
  • Routinely reviews, refines, and updates Security Team Training Plan.
    • Maintains all Training-Plan documentation.
  • Provides corrective feedback to Security Supervisors and Officers, as needed.
  • Monitors and Managers Security’s overtime in relation to established budget.
  • Manages identification-badging and access-control program and related processes.
  • Collaborates with NA Sales Team and other units hosting events, to ensure scheduling of event-security and adequate coverage of security functions.
  • Recommends purchases of Security Team supplies to Manager of Safety and Risk.
  • Monitors and manages parking requests and any special requests for on-pier traffic (e.g., sponsorship activations, temporary access for municipal and other work needing to be done).
  • Inspects, maintains, and recommends replacement of Security Team uniforms and equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of Security Team uniforms and supplemental apparel, and recommends purchase of any additional uniforms and other apparel to Manager of Safety and Risk.
  • Collaborates with Manager of Safety and Risk and Director of Security to develop annual budgets.
  • Supports the Manager of Safety and Risk with coordinating and executing drills throughout the year.
  • Manages the organization’s two-way radio systems (working with supervisors and managers to conduct needs assessment, collaborating with third-party service providers, coordinates repairs and replacements, schedules and conducts annual radio-maintenance days, purchases new and replacement equipment and accessories).
  • Serves as the Aquarium’s security liaison with the Waterfront Partnership Safety Coalition and the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore.
    • Attends routine meetings and reports relevant information to appropriate NA colleagues.
  • Liaises with the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as needed.
  • Leads, coordinates, and communicates preparations to host high-profile special-guests and their security-details.
  • Administers the sensitive-item lost-and-found processes and procedures.
  • Routinely reviews all shift logs and incident reports.
    • Coaches team-members on improving content of reports, as needed.

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma and 3 years Security experience required. Previous supervisory experience or experience in a leadership role. Customer service experience is a plus. All supervisors are expected to avail themselves of developmental trainings that may assist in the performance of their duties (e.g., conflict management, adult and pediatric first aid/CPR/AED training, and leadership training). High familiarity level with fire board and other operations systems, particularly in enabling/disabling administration of remote areas of the facility relative to these systems.

  • Problem Solving: Ensures security for visitors and staff. Resolves officer conflicts and assists with visitor complaints.
  • Human Relations: Daily contact with staff and visitors to the Aquarium.
  • Accountability: Accountable for overseeing the Security Operation for one of three security shifts. Requires flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
