Research is conducted to develop new techniques for active and passive microwave remote sensing of the environment. Subjects of current interest include remote sensing of soil moisture, sea salinity, and biomass. The research includes the development of instruments and retrieval algorithms. The current focus is on L-band and the instruments SMOS, Aquarius and SMAP. The issues include calibration, inter-comparison, algorithm improvement and new applications such as use of the polarimetric channels, active/passive synergy, and retrievals in the cryosphere (e.g. ice thickness). Techniques to improve resolution and handle unwanted natural signals and RFI are also relevant.
