We are searching for an experienced Controller at our 63rd St Operations facility.

Position Title: Controller

Work Location Authorization: Hybrid On-Site/Remote
Campus Location: 63rd St Operations
Reports to: Associate Vice President, Budget & Financial Affairs
FLSA Classification: Exempt/Salaried
FTE: 100% (40 hrs/week)
Compensation: $92,434 - $106,300 based on prior experience

Job Summary
The Controller is primarily responsible for directing administrative and operational activities associated with the collection and disbursement of funds and the recording of all financial transactions of the University. Provides accounting services to the University community and its numerous off-campus partners in support of the University's mission. Services provided by the Finance department are governed by the key principles of customer service, regulatory compliance, and fiscal responsibility.
The Controller must ensure the University's understanding of, and compliance with, external requirements, including but not limited to: financial reporting and accounting standards, state and federal tax laws, and other requirements. The position also ensures University assets and activities are adequately protected through appropriate enterprise internal control procedures and will provide leadership and direction for the configuration and maintenance of enterprise information systems that support the University’s business processes and work flows.
This is a flexible work schedule and expected to be on campus during monthly close.
Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Direct daily operations and supervise a small staff in performing the following activities, including but not limited to all aspects of accounting (GL, A/P, A/R, grants, bonds, etc.), financial reporting, cash management, debt financing, investments, student accounts receivable, and collections.
  • Develop, implement, test, and monitor strong internal accounting controls and sound financial procedures, processes, and efficient work flows.
  • Work closely with the Associate Vice President for Budget and Financial Affairs to ensure budget processes and financial decisions align with strategic goals and objectives based on assessment results, program reviews, enrollment goals, and institutional research, among other information sources.
  • Review, analyze, develop, and communicate appropriate accounting and financial processes, written policies and procedures covering all functional areas of Accounting.
  • Work with appropriate internal groups and external constituents (as necessary) to support and provide leadership in the implementation of procedures, programs, or opportunities to increase the efficiency and/or effectiveness of campus operations.
  • Provide accurate and timely reports on campus financial conditions, monthly statement of net assets, statement of revenues, expense and changes in net assets, statement of cash flows, and monthly operating budget versus actual reports.
  • Observe and monitor University fiscal conditions; provide analysis to support the business operations and monitor the ongoing financial health of the University, including forecasting, trend analysis, modeling, ratio analysis, and recommending appropriate action.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the University’s external financial auditors and ensure that all preparations and work product required for audits are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Administer the fiscal components of federal, state and other grants and the cash management component of Title IV student financial aid in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Develop and maintain positive, effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide accurate financial analysis, data, and reports to support campus decision-makers, as needed, including board presentations and special ad hoc reports.
  • Execute conversion of manual procedures into integrated and automated processes.
  • Administer, track, and accurately record endowment and gift activity.
  • Serve as key financial contact for system implementations, enhancements, and auxiliary “add-ons”.
  • Oversee the distribution and reporting of all federally required documents
  • A hybrid position with team work and a high levels of communication with the team
  • Other duties as assigned.


What We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or another applicable field
  • Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is desirable.
  • Ten (10) years of controller experience

What We’d Like You to Have:

  • Substantial, progressively responsible, and successful experience in accounting or senior-level financial management in higher education
  • Current or recent experience utilizing Ellucian /Colleague systems or other products such as Banner, PeopleSoft, Oracle, SAP or other similar products.

A comprehensive benefits package is available to full-time employees who work a minimum of 30 hours each week. Employees who work 20 – 29 hours each week are eligible for only the employer-paid short-term & long-term disability, employer-paid life insurance & accidental death and dismemberment, and the retirement plan, which includes up to 2.5% employer matching.
Employees who work fewer than 20 hours per week are eligible to participate in Naropa’s retirement plan only, which includes up to 2.5% employer matching.
All regular full-time and part-time faculty and staff, including student workers, accrue sick leave benefits. Full-time and part-time staff positions accrue vacation and personal time. All leave accrual rates vary based on the position, hours worked, and years of service.
