This is a non-represented position (no union affiliation) and is subject to the provisions of the Personnel Rules of the Municipality of Anchorage.
DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste Services
HOURS OF WORK: Hours Vary; Monday thru Friday
LOCATION OF WORK: Central Transfer Station (CTS): East 56th Ave, Anchorage, AK; Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL): 15500 E. Eagle River Loop, Eagle River, AK
Example of Duties

Under general direction of SWS Director, develops, administers, and enforces the department health and safety program. Assists two utilities and four divisions with developing their individual functional area safety programs; provides expertise regarding safety codes, rules, and practices; provides in depth guidance on OSHA general industry safety standards, Uniform Fire Code provisions, etc. Present information at monthly safety meetings, coordinates disability management cases. Responsible for identifying and prioritizing facility maintenance and repair requirements; develops contract specifications; and oversees contracted performance for specification compliance.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High School diploma, GED or equivalent, and eight (8) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.

Associate's Degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies or a discipline related to occupational health and safety and six (6) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.

Bachelor's Degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies or a discipline related to occupational health and safety and four (4) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.

Master's Degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies or a discipline related to occupational health and safety and two (2) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.
  • Valid State of Alaska Driver's License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • American Red Cross First Aid Certification, and American Red Cross
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Organization Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification or equivalent within 90 days of hire.
Preferences:
Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) or Occupation Health and Safety Technician (OHST), certified forklift trainer.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
