Multnomah ESD is Hiring an Educational Assistant IA - Migrant Education Program Summer School 2024 Near Portland, OR

The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment.

REPORT TO: Migrant Education Program Manager 

POSITION PURPOSE: Provide educational and classroom assistance under guidelines of teachers, principals and other supervisors, and assists in carrying out instructional activities, promoting student safety and well-being, and reinforcing classroom programs.

NATURE & SCOPE: This position is subject to Board policies, administrative rules and procedures, department regulations and applicable State and Federal statutes. This position carries no administrative authority or responsibility. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Confers with teachers and other professional staff to review day-to-day routines and programs.
  • Guides individual and/or small groups in educational, creative and social activities; assists with classwork and assignments; and helps monitor student activities in the school setting.
  • Performs support tasks such as serving as a translator in educational and support activities, making parent contacts, preparing and organizing educational materials, art supplies, bulletin boards and assisting with the development and implementation of home literacy activities.
  • Performs administrative record keeping functions according to state, federal and local program needs.
  • Attends evening meetings.
  • Assists in the daily monitoring and safety of children during classroom, recess, lunch or other break periods.
  • Attends staff development functions, and other meetings.
  • Helps perform building, classroom and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintains data and completes reports as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a classroom environment; may be in a 1:1 or small group setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to following directions, follow through on classroom plans, and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, educational assistants, and other MESD personnel.
  • Ability to listen, make sound emergency decisions, and effectively work with students in stressful environments.
  • Good basic problem solving with effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties.
  • Bilingual Skills Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma, or G.E.D., and previous experience or course work with migrant students, or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
