General Statement of Duties

The UBMS Summer Instructor is responsible for teaching two sections of a non-credit course to high school students attending the UBMS Summer Academy. Instructors provide rigorous, project based, college preparatory curriculum to students during a six-week, residential academy hosted at Fitchburg State University.

Responsibilities

• Teach assigned course(s) which may include: MCAS Math, MCAS English, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Computer Science, Foreign Language (Spanish/Latin/ASL), English/Language Arts or LAB Sciences;
• Develop and implement rigorous lessons and learning opportunities for students;
• Evaluate student learning through the use of formal and informal assessment strategies;
• Provide students with regular feedback on assignments;
• Communicate student concerns with project director and college access advisor;
• Submit required grade reports in week 3 and week 6 of the Summer Academy;
• Attend onboarding training (virtually or in person);
• For math & science instructors only: Provide mentorship and guidance to 1-2 college students working in as teaching assistants in your classroom.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in the content area;
• Demonstrated ability to reach and motivate low-level learners;
• Evidence of commitment to classroom teaching/learning, and a demonstrated ability to incorporate research methodology and technology in the classroom;
• Willingness to advise students to help them meet their goals.

Desired Qualifications:

• Master's degree in content area, education, or teaching;
• Experience with project-based learning;
• Massachusetts Teaching Certification in Content Area (8-12).

Additional Information:


The Summer Academy 2023 will run from June 26 - August 4, 2023 (in person, at Fitchburg State University), with onboarding occurring the week of June 20-24, 2023 (online if needed).

Salary:$25.00-$40.00/hour varies per position and grant limitations.

• Math and Science instructors will receive an additional $500 distributed across the pay periods for the role of mentoring and guiding the teaching assistants. These additional funds are part of an initiative between the STEM Starter Academy and Upward Bound Math & Science.

Hours per Week:

Math and Science Lab instructors can expect to teach Monday-Thursday from 8 am - 12 pm.

ELA, Computer Science, and Foreign Language instructors can expect to teach Monday-Thursday from 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM. Once a week, all instructors will meet from 12:15-12:45 PM with the project director to discuss student progress and curriculum. Instructors will also be paid for one hour of prep each day.
