Job Description:

Function of Position:

The Engineering Science/Physics Laboratory Technician is responsible for the setup, storage, repair and maintenance of all Engineering Science and Physics laboratory equipment, support of students in course and co-curricular projects, and supervision of students working in prototyping lab.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain records of laboratory schedules and equipment needed.
  • Set up and return to storage all equipment for student laboratories.
  • Assure the proper operation of all apparatus setup for student labs.
  • Test procedures and generate sample data for newly designed experiments.
  • Troubleshoot and repair defective or inoperative equipment.
  • Assure the availability of all consumable supplies.
  • Receive and inspect all newly purchased equipment and supplies.
  • Advise faculty and students on the proper use and application of equipment.
  • Maintain inventory records on all equipment held.
  • Assure appropriate and effective use of storage space.
  • Calibrate and adjust instrumentation as needed.
  • Keep records on the use and location of equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory log of course laboratory manuals
  • Assemble and fabricate equipment when needed.
  • Set up equipment for demonstration or display.
  • Keep a library of equipment manuals and operating instructions.
  • Recommend equipment and replacement parts for purchasing.
  • Supervise student aides and work study students working in our laboratories.
  • Assist in demonstrations, lab supervision and instruction, and test proctoring.
  • Act as the department's computer liaison to ETS.
  • Monitors computer hardware and desktop image in all Engineering and Physics labs; reports any concerns to ETS.
  • Create and track purchase orders.
  • Responsible for adhering to the College Code of Conduct.
  • Supervise students in our prototyping lab (9-156 and 9-156A) in the safe use of machine tools such as mills, lathes, saws, sanders, and grinders.
  • Be available to loan students supplies and equipment for use in course projects and ensure that all items are returned on schedule.
  • Provide technical support for students engaged in curricular and co-curricular projects and intercollegiate competitions.
  • Responsible for contributing to and maintaining an inclusive and collaborative College environment.
  • Responsible for maintaining technological competencies utilized by the College.
  • Expected to attend weekly technician meetings and monthly department meetings.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the department chair.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent record of attendance in previous employment position.
  • Associates Degree in a science or engineering related field from an accredited institution.
  • Proven ability to use, maintain, and repair mechanical and electronic equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team to obtain organizational goals.
  • Experience working effectively on long term projects with minimal supervision.
  • Highly competent in the use of computer software and hardware.
  • Ability to use, and maintenance of machining equipment such as mills, lathes, saws, sanders, and other machine shop equipment.
  • Ability to build wooden competition tracks.
  • Commitment to supporting an inclusive environment on campus. Evidence of respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
  • Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Employment or academic experience in both electronics and machining.
  • Experience in managing an inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Competent of using SolidWorks (CAD), Logger pro, and PASCO capstone software.
  • Ability in CNC Machining.
  • Ability to program microcontrollers.
  • Demonstrated ability to create engineering prototypes.
  • Successful completion of college physics courses.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently.

Additional Information:

MCC is currently testing a Pilot Telecommuting Program that runs from October 25th, 2021 to June 30th, 2023. Under the pilot program, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 5 days per pay period pending departmental need and leadership approval. The pilot program may be extended or terminated at any time at the College's discretion.
