Job Description:

Function of Position:

Faculty prepare and teach face-to-face and online courses for the Optical Systems Technology program, develop new educational materials, assist with the assessment of student learning, as appropriate. Classes may be assigned at the Brighton and/or Downtown Campus (or other sites, as appropriate). This faculty position will report to the chairperson of the optical Systems Technology program within the Engineering Technologies department. The successful candidate will bring a passion for teaching and a desire to support and mentor MCC students as they pursue educational and career goals.

  • This full time temporary position may be renewed annually determined by departmental need and College budget. This position is eligible for paid time off and benefits.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates and maintains current subject area knowledge.
  • Teaches courses and evaluates student performance in Optical Systems Technology as per guidelines set by the department and Monroe Community College.
  • Teaches course(s)/section(s) each term, as outlined by the contract and as available.
  • Develops online Optical Systems Technology courses.
  • Prepares lesson plans and creates instructional materials and activities for student engagement.
  • Prepares Course Information Sheet/Syllabus/Outlines in accordance with department and College guidelines.
  • Establishes and maintains an engaging and supportive classroom environment.
  • Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other records according to department and College guidelines and submits them in a timely manner.
  • Assists department with student retention and completion initiatives including early alert.
  • Develops innovative teaching pedagogies to facilitate learning.
  • Incorporates high-impact teaching practices into course design, as appropriate.
  • Actively engages in pedagogical and academic discipline professional development.
  • Demonstrates excellent time management skills, and the ability to prioritize workflow and multi-task.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the department chair, as appropriate.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor's degree or higher in Optics (or a related field) from a regionally-accredited higher education institution OR has three or more years of experience in the field.
  • Ability to teach courses within the department.
  • Commitment to supporting an inclusive campus environment.
  • Evidence of respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
  • Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college.
  • Evidence of proficiency with technology.
  • Commitment to continued professional growth.
  • Evidence of effective communication (interpersonal, speaking, and writing) skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree from from a regionally-accredited higher education institution.
  • Five or more years' industrial/field experience.
  • Teaching experience in Optics or related discipline.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following course topics: Conventional Optical Fabrication, CNC Optical Fabrication, Optical Systems, Geometrical Optics, Optical Instruments and Analysis, Wave Optics, Lasers, Photonics.
  • Experience with Interferometers and Metrology equipment.
  • Experience with Advanced Optical Fabrication Process.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, implementing a variety of teaching strategies.
  • Awareness of the potential value of technology as a tool for teaching.
  • Experience and/or interest in developing and teaching online courses.
  • Experience with computerized student record management.
  • Available to teach late afternoon and evening courses.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages, proficiently.

Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $52,000 to $65,000 and is based on these mentioned factors.
