Job Description:

Function of Position:

The Teaching & Creativity Center (TCC) Coordinator/Instructor reports directly to the Associate Vice President, Academic Affairs, and has responsibility for a wide array of professional services. The successful candidate will bring expertise in pedagogy to MCC and a commitment to equity in teaching and learning. The coordinator/instructor will support vibrant, in-house, continuous professional development for 700 full-time and adjunct teaching faculty as well as 800 non-teaching employees who engage in the teaching and learning enterprise at the college. Working with advisory boards at the Brighton and Downtown campuses, the coordinator/instructor will provide leadership in promoting excellence by presenting research on best practices, organizing discussions on current issues, providing individual and department consulting services, generating and organizing workshops/seminars and other forms of professional development, and seeking supplementary funding for the TCC.

The Teaching & Creativity Center's purpose is to continually work towards equitable outcomes for a diverse student body by increasing teaching effectiveness, inspiring innovation, and improving student learning. The TCC fosters a supportive environment where we improve our teaching practice throughout our careers. The TCC promotes the scholarship of teaching and learning, helps all who teach to engage in reflective dialogue, applies current research to practice, and connects teaching and learning to institutional initiatives. Our Center strives to meet the following goals:
Goal 1: Create a culture of critical reflection, continual growth, and collaboration for faculty at all stages of professional growth.
Goal 2: Promote evidence-based, high-impact, innovative course design and teaching strategies that improve student outcomes.
Goal 3: Facilitate faculty inquiry into the study of teaching & learning with an equity lens.
Goal 4: Empower faculty and staff to connect teaching and learning to institutional initiatives.

  • This is a temporary, 2 year appointment that is eligible for paid time off and medical benefits.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with the TCC's Advisory Committees to develop and organize professional development opportunities and respond to the needs of employees at all campus locations
  • Teach one 3-credit course annually
  • Work collaboratively and actively with other college offices and committees on professional learning across the college and the strategies listed in the New Learning Compact professional learning strategic plan
  • Organize and lead the First-year and Second-year Faculty Series
  • Collaborate with the College-wide Mentor Program
  • Work cooperatively with the Adjunct Development Committee, actively reach out to adjuncts, and keep them networked with each other and the general college community
  • Consult with departments about their particular needs and concerns and help generate and tailor programming to address those needs and concerns
  • Maintain a robust collection of online and on-demand professional learning resources
  • Propose an annual release time plan to distribute to support the center activities
  • Provide forums/conversations for dialogue on current, relevant topics to support student learning, such as high impact practices and equity in the classroom, etc.
  • Manage the TCC website and contribute to the college-wide professional learning website
  • Collaborate with the Virtual Campus as they support technology training and promote using technology to creatively enhance teaching and learning
  • Participate in local, regional, and national professional development organizations and connect with other teaching and learning centers and education departments in the region
  • Create programming that targets and involves employees at all stages of their careers: new, mid-career, and senior
  • Discreetly act as a coach/colleague for faculty who would like to be observed in the classroom and explore classroom issues outside the high-stakes tenure-and-promotion process
  • Work collaboratively with the grants office to seek supplemental support for the TCC programming and activities. Assists in the development of college grant proposals and implementation of grant projects, as appropriate
  • Lead the development, review, and revision of the TCC assessment
  • Publish an annual report of center activities each June
  • Conduct day-to-day operations, including facility matters, budget and submission of all required paperwork/information
  • Contribute to the College through division, department and College committees
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Associate Vice President

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field
  • Specialist in teaching and learning
  • Ability to work independently, in a team setting, and prioritize workflow
  • Five or more years of full-time teaching, at least two of which must be in higher education
  • Demonstrated leadership in an academic setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning theories and their applications in the classroom
  • Evidence of experience applying creative approaches in the classroom
  • Evidence of proficiency with technology
  • Commitment to supporting an inclusive environmental on campus. Evidence of respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs
  • Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college
  • Commitment to continued professional growth
  • Evidence of effective communication (interpersonal, speaking, and writing) skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A background in educational psychology or another aspect of teaching and learning
  • 10 or more years of teaching
  • Three or more years of teaching higher education, preferably at a community college
  • Grant-writing experience
  • Budget experience

Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $57,684 to $77,952 and is based on these mentioned factors.

MCC is currently testing a Pilot Telecommuting Program that runs from October 25th, 2021 to June 30th, 2023. Under the pilot program, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 5 days per pay period pending departmental need and leadership approval. The pilot program may be extended or terminated at any time at the College's discretion.
