Job Description:

Function of Position:

The Associate Vice President (AVP), Student Success and Strategic Initiatives, reports directly to the Provost and Vice President, Academic and Student Affairs, and is responsible for leading strategies that advance student retention, completion, and post-completion success in collaboration with colleagues across the College. This position is responsible for the management of all functions related to advisement, transfer and career development, as well as strategic projects and grants. This position promotes and sustains the Division's commitment to excellence and innovation in providing seamless and holistic support to our diverse student body and College community. This position assists the Division in responding to emerging issues, trends, and community needs, providing internal leadership that supports MCC's regional and national reputation as a leader among best practices colleges. This position champions diversity, equity, and belonging through continuous professional learning and exemplary inclusive practices to strengthen a culture of belonging.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead improvements in rates of completion, transfer, and attainment of jobs with value in the labor market - and to achieve equity in those outcomes. MCC embraces the guided pathways model to manage and sustain large-scale transformational change. This position will work in partnership with the Academic and Student Affairs Leadership Council and is responsible for providing data analysis that assists the Division and the College in understanding the needs of students and leads to the successful development, implementation, and assessment of student persistence, retention, and completion.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Oversee departments, including but not limited to Advisement and Transfer, Schools and Integrated Pathways, and Career and Education to Employment Services
  • Serve as the primary College representative for the State University of New York (SUNY) student success initiatives
  • Work with Institutional Research in the development and expansion of data analytics to support strategic student success activities and post-completion success
  • Create long- and short-term plans and evaluation of student retention and engagement strategies and programs
  • Lead assessment efforts to ensure achievement of student success outcomes that are data informed
  • Work collaboratively with Academic and Student Affairs leaders to embed a student success culture into all aspects of the Academic and Student Affairs Division
  • Work to foster cross-divisional partnerships to ensure meaningful student success efforts
  • Provide primary leadership for administrative processes and operational procedures related to assigned departments
  • Lead the collaboration with area colleges in developing articulation agreements for seamless transfer
  • Ensure our advisement systems and services are accessible to students and available to meet demand
  • Exercise budget authority and administrative approvals
  • Provide and coordinate development opportunities for staff
  • Lead a College-wide advisement training program for new and returning teaching faculty with advising assignments.
  • Collaborate with other divisions within the College that are responsible for advising and retention functions, including Economic Development and Innovative Workforce Services and Applied Technologies Center (advisors, coordinators, specialists) and Diversity, Equity, and Belonging (Educational Opportunity Program and Global Education and International Services student advisors).
  • Serve on various committees, task force groups, and general planning functions
  • Direct essential aspects of the Division's efforts to support the College's overall mission, strategic plan, and goals

Secondary Functions:

  • Work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and staff across the College in service of the College's vision, mission, and strategic goals
  • Represent the College in local and state forums
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by the Provost and Vice President, Academic and Student Affairs

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution
  • Five or more years of progressive administrative experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience leading student diversity, equity, and belonging initiatives
  • Documented ability to integrate data into decision-making to promote effective practices and policies
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate partnerships and to work with diverse groups of faculty, students, and staff on complex issues
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational leadership with excellent management, human relations, and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of current trends in academic and student success strategies in higher education
  • Evidence of successful budget management and oversight
  • Demonstrated experience in setting goals and assessing outcomes
  • Evidence of strong technical/computer skills
  • Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution
  • Documented experience in working with community, governmental, and other public sector agencies
  • Proven success working collaboratively with co-curricular learning experiences and within the development of institutional partnerships focused on improving student success
  • Proven ability to listen to a variety of constituent groups and synthesize input, make decisions, and share information broadly to build consensus and support for action

  • Paid Personal Leave: Granted up to 4 days at start of each fiscal year
  • Paid Holidays: 9 paid holidays, plus December 24 when it occurs M - Th and the weekdays through the end of the year

MCC is currently testing a Pilot Telecommuting Program that runs from October 25th, 2021 to June 30th, 2023. Under the pilot program, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 5 days per pay period pending departmental need and leadership approval. The pilot program may be extended or terminated at any time at the College's discretion.
