Job Description:

Function of Position:

Reporting to the Director of Learning Support Systems, Academic Coaches for Evening Shifts are professional staff who work with students on one or more evenings from Monday through Thursday between 4 pm - 9 pm to help them to develop effective reading and learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners. The role of the coach is to help the student improve academically by identifying strengths and weaknesses and designing appropriate activities to improve their learning.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Foster the development of independent, intentional learners;
  • Provide one-on-one coaching related to academic success;
  • Help students understand and use effective reading and learning strategies
  • Provide assistance to students needing intensive study skills and reading help in a myriad of subjects;
  • Help students identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success;
  • Help students focus on individual goals and identify steps to reaching those goals;
  • Work with students to develop strong time management and organization;
  • Develop with students individualized academic plans;
  • Motivate students to take ownership of their own academic success;
  • Refer students to other services on campus such as academic advising, personal counseling, career counseling, subject-specific tutoring, etc.;
  • Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty;
  • Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters;
  • Collaborate with faculty on providing literacy workshops and in setting Academic Coaching expectations;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Learning Support Systems on providing workshops to fill learning gaps of both tutors and students with discipline specific content. The Director of Learning Support Systems will collaborate with various departments as needed;
  • Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook;
  • Assist students in the development of reading and learning strategies as well as note taking and study techniques;

Secondary Functions:

  • Visit classrooms, as needed to introduce students to Academic Coaching services
  • Assisting with other learning assistance projects as assigned

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Reading, Literacy, or comparable degree
  • Experience working with diverse college populations
  • Technology savvy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Reading or Reading Education or comparable degree
  • Two years of developmental reading teaching experience
  • Some tutoring experience
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

Additional Information:

Job Type: Part Time

Hours: 10-20 Hours per Week

Pay Rates:

Peer

  • Current MCC Student - $14.20/hr

Paraprofessional

  • Associates Degree - $15.00/hr

Professional

  • Bachelor's Degree - $16/hr
  • Master's Degree - $18/hr
  • PHD - $20.00

Adjunct - $25.00/hr (to qualify for adjunct pay rate, applicants must have at least one assigned course for the semester)
