The Headlines:
The Barley Development Supervisor (BDS) is based in Burley, ID, and leads applied technical projects to support the goals of the Molson Coors breeding and malting teams to provide Molson Coors with barley varieties with superior agronomics and malting/brewing performance. The position provides significant hands-on support and leadership in the activities associated with the planning, planting, growing, harvesting and data evaluation of barley field trials and manages the barley and malt analytical lab.
 
The BDS supervises four Barley team members.
 
The Responsibilities:
• Lead, manage, and develop research execution team of four positions through use of people tools such as active listening, providing useful feedback, monthly 1x1’s, and annual development plans.
• Plan execution of annual field trial program. Leads and assists with trial planting, maintenance, rogueing and harvesting.
• Manages third party research service providers
• Manages barley and malt quality lab and ensures personnel, equipment and supplies are in place to meet established timelines.
• Completes barley quality data analysis and maintains data in barley database.
• Lead implementation of upgrades for Barley to Beer database, serves as liaison for new software implementation, and provides training and trouble-shooting expertise.
• Manages all lab equipment, computers and software associated with quality labs.
• Manages all post-harvest small plot seed cleaning operations in order to meet timelines for delivery of data.
 
The Qualifications:
• BS degree in agricultural field with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• Basic knowledge of experimental design and statistics.
• Experience with agricultural equipment including planters, combines or other small plot research equipment.
• Demonstrates proficiency in computer software applications and database management.
• Knowledge of plant breeding, genetics, field plot design / techniques, and barley agronomics
• Experience working in or managing an analytical laboratory.
• Requires domestic travel to target production areas to execute and manage field trials.
• Ability to work in cross-functional team environment
• Ability to lift 50 pounds, work in dusty environments, as well as work with barley plants & grain
• Has or is willing to obtain Pesticide Applicator License.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
