Groundskeeper/Maintenance

Districtwide

Open to District Employees Only

8 hrs per day/260 days in full work year

.5 FTE/4 hrs Groundskeeper (Wage Range $19.80 - $27.10)

.5 FTE/4 hrs Maintenance (Wage Range $21.79 - $29.81)

(Wages based on 2023/24 Wage Schedule. 2024/25 Wage Schedule to be determined)

Postition Start Date: 7/1/2024 (Negotiable based on training needs)

Groundskeeper

JOB GOAL: To provide safe and attractive building and ground facilities in and on which students can learn, play and develop. To perform a variety of tasks in the care and maintenance of the grounds and athletic fields.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
  1. One year experience in grounds, lawn care and landscaping
  2. 18 years of age or older
  3. Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing with students, parents, staff and the general public
  1. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  2. Ability to work on school grounds and fields with a minimum of supervision
  3. Knowledge of the operation of power equipment and the ability to maintain, such as large and small mowers, chainsaws, tractors, forklifts, light trucks, sprayers, and hedge shears
  4. Ability and knowledge to establish and maintain the turf of lawns and athletic fields and to landscape
  5. Knowledge of the application, storage and safe use of all chemicals and pesticides
  6. Knowledge of the common plant turf diseases and insect pests and methods used to control them
  7. Ability to perform safety inspections annually on district vehicles and to prepare reports as required
  8. Familiar with handling of and disposal of hazardous materials, and safety requirements for working around asbestos and electrical equipment
  1. Knowledge of irrigation systems and repairs
  2. Knowledge of security systems, (i.e. electronic and key locks)
  3. Perform physical requirements which may include:
  • Requires moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Requires frequent and prolonged standing, walking and bending
  • Requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions of heat, cold and where ventilation may be inadequate
  • May require exposure to chemicals, dirt, paint, chalk, noise, odors and the possibility of electrical shock
  • Requires ability to operate tractors, mowers, dump truck, district vehicles, forklift, power tools and etc.
  • Requires ability to climb ladders, stretch, bend, and attain heights for gutter, roof, electrical repairs and etc.
  • Such alternative to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may deem appropriate and acceptable

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.

  1. Care for all lawn areas including athletic fields by watering, mowing, seeding, fertilizing, and spraying as needed
  2. Prepare athletic fields for appropriate activities as prescribed by responsible administrator
  3. Care for hedges, shrubs, trees, including pruning, trimming, disease and pest control
  4. Plant seeds, bulbs and annuals as needed and provide care for them throughout their growing season
  5. Respond to any maintenance emergency that arises, (i.e. plumbing problems, broken windows, locks, doors, vandalism repairs, etc.)
  6. Maintain repair of equipment and district vehicle including responsibility for all grounds related equipment
  7. Maintain the district warehouse supplies
  8. Serve as district liaison with vendors in locating and obtaining materials, parts, and supplies, (i.e. chemical supplies, custodial paper and etc.)
  9. Supervise student workers as required
  10. Assist with snow and ice removal from sidewalks, roofs, entryways and driveways and spread sand, salt or ashes to prevent slipping
  11. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information aboutstudents and staff
  1. Participate in in-service programs as assigned
  2. Assist maintenance in winter
  3. Know safe procedures for working around asbestos
  4. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate to the Board or Administration

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:

  1. Possess and maintain a valid First Aid card if required
  2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  3. Valid Oregon Driver's License
  4. Oregon Pesticide Applicator's License as required by ORS 634.006 (17)&(18), 634.116 (15B)&(15C), Oregon Administrative Rule 603-57-001 (8) & 603-57-200 (b) & 2, Department of Agriculture

Maintenance

JOB GOAL: To repair and maintain the district buildings and equipment in order to provide students a safe, attractive, comfortable and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
  2. Three years of paid experience in general construction and/or maintenance work, involving some driving of light trucks or other construction equipment
  3. 21 years of age or older
  4. Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing with students, parents, staff and the general public)
  5. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  6. Ability to maintain confidentiality
  7. Ability to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in several trades in maintenance, construction, and repair of buildings, with limited supervision
  8. Knowledge of basic operations, building codes, tools, and terms used in building and maintenance work
  9. Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and equipment used in building maintenance, equipment, plumbing and electrical repairs, and maintenance painting
  10. Ability to operate light trucks and construction equipment
  11. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  12. Knowledge of basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in fencing and grounds maintenance work
  13. Knowledge of security systems, (I.e. electronic and key locks) and the ability to respond to alarm calls
  14. Perform physical requirements which may include:
  • Moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions of heat, cold and where ventilation may be inadequate

  • Such alternative to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may deem appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may also be assigned

  1. Prepare work schedules as needed
  2. Assist in training new custodial/maintenance staff
  3. Examine school buildings on a regular basis for needed repair and maintenance, for fire hazards, sanitary, and safety hazards and make reports as required'
  4. Respond to emergency needs of buildings and grounds and provide repairs as needed
  5. Perform routine maintenance on plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry, construction, and equipment related to all school activities
  6. Perform building and district maintenance and repairs, (i.e. roofing, gutters, painting, cyclone fencing, dry rot, rebuilding and replacing blacktop, cement, and etc.)
  7. Perform minor remodeling of existing facilities to meet the educational needs as requested
  8. Assist with ice and snow removal
  9. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information
  10. Inspect and maintain ventilation systems to insure proper heat and air flow; check room temperature, service fan compressors and pumps as required
  11. Inspect equipment, buildings, and grounds for safety hazards
  12. Make appropriate provision for security of building and district properties
  13. Order supplies and materials, dispense supplies and equipment and maintain inventory on a timely basis to maintain efficient housekeeping and maintenance operations
  14. Coordinate set up and supervision for special events
  15. Perform routine maintenance work such as installing recreational equipment and fences, digging ditches, laying pipe, moving bleachers, and hauling rubbish
  16. Perform routine adjustments and repairs to equipment, furniture, cabinets, grounds, locks, and install glass
  17. Prepare surfaces for painting, repainting or staining and apply finish to various surfaces such as wood, glass, metal, plaster, stucco, wall board, brick, and cement
  18. Participate in in-service training programs as assigned
  19. Assist custodians as needed including routine cleaning and maintenance assigned
  20. Know safe procedures for working around asbestos
  21. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem appropriate by the Board or Administration.
