Modest Community Services Association Inc. is Hiring a Registered Nurse, Part -Time Near Staten Island, NY

Qualifications/Experience: Certification by the Department of Education, State of New York as a Registered Nurse. Minimum two years clinical experience. Under the supervision of a physician or a supervising nurse, this person provides direct treatment and dispenses prescribed medication. Knowledge and experience in the field of developmental disabilities as a nurse is a plus.

Responsibilities: The RN will serve in the capacity of the coordinator of medical care and liaison for all the individuals at the IRA. The RN will ensure the safety and well-being of individuals receiving services and this must be done in accordance to the Agency’s policies and procedures that complies with local, state, and federal statutes and regulations. The nurse must supervise and review blood pressures, menstrual cycle charts, medication administration, hepatitis and PPD status, pharmaceutical interventions, first aid measures, prevention and control of communicable diseases, and individual’s hygiene. Clinical knowledge and follow-up of participants care in Audiology, dentistry, neurology, ophthalmology, physical examination and lab work, physical therapy etc.

Tasks

  • Working knowledge of OPWDD Rules and Regulations and IRA procedures and protocols is not required but it's a plus.
  • Ensure acquisition of physical examination by physician to achieve participant’s compliance with OPWDD regulations in the State of New York.
  • Ensure all required medical and health related documentation is complete, current, and maintained.
  • Review documentation (Physical Orders, MARs and controlled drug sheets) ensuring compliance and accuracy of medication/treatment administration.
  • Provides the facility and staff with means for the prompt detection and referral of health problems through coordination of adequate medical surveillance, periodic inspection, and regular medical examinations
  • Writes an annual Nursing Summary Evaluation Service Plan for each participant.
  • Participates in the continuing interdisciplinary evaluation of each participant for the purpose of beginning, monitoring and following up on each individual’s medical needs
  • Attends and participates in staff conferences and in the Inter-Disciplinary Treatment Team meetings including the 60-day and annual reviews.
  • Reports communicable diseases and infections in accordance with the law.
  • Participates in pre-admission planning and evaluations, program designs and placement of participants at the time of admissions.
  • Reviews lab work and intervenes as needed, based on lab findings.
  • Transcribes or supervises the transcription of doctors’ orders onto medication sheets.
  • Reviews participants’ medications for consideration of potential adverse reactions, allergies, interactions of medications, and contra-indications.
  • Responsible for the supervision of participant medication administration.
  • Reports to the physician participant’s responses to medications and makes recommendations accordingly.
  • Implement and evaluate Practitioners and clinical team recommendations, i.e. medication changes and initiation of new medications.
  • In consultation with the pharmacist, the nurse disposes of all medication that is not given to the participants. This includes all excess, tainted, or mis-prescribed medication.
  • Certifies and re-certifies staff members for Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP) and periodically review the performance of direct care staff to ensure that it is consistent with standards of performance for AMAP staff.
  • Monitors participants’ clinic appointments and doctors’ findings and oversees all hospitalizations and emergency room visits.
  • Monitors vital signs, blood levels, menstruation periods, hepatitis, tuberculosis, and seizure statuses.
  • Prepares an emergency medical kit for each residence according to the guidelines of American Red Cross and trains the Residence Supervisor and Assistant Residence Supervisor in the use of this kit.
  • Participate in individual planning conferences such as; Human Rights Review, Annual and Semi-Annual Individual Service Plan, Bi-monthly and weekly clinical reviews etc.'
