MOCA Systems is Hiring a Remote Economist (Construction Industry)

Position: Construction Economist Location: VirtualMOCA Systems, Inc. MSI helps property owners successfully collaborate, plan, build, and manage the facilities and infrastructure required to support their mission.Serving the construction industry since 1999, MSI has completed over 4,000 projects for private, state, and federal developers while providing technology collaborative planning solutions for over 51,000 users of the world’s leading global commercial builders listed on ENR’s 400 & 600 Top Contractors List.Summary:MSI is seeking an economist to assist in delivering our growing suite of service offerings. The position will report directly to MSI’s Chief Economist with a mid to long-term objective of assuming that position. Assignments include assisting and eventually leading risk analyses; assessing labor rates and construction materials costs; estimating construction project costs; characterizing construction markets in the US and overseas; and conducting research to identify features that impact construction labor and materials availability and cost, and bid values. Familiarity in preparing Cost/Benefit, Economic, and Business Case Analyses related to construction is a plus. Experience in construction cost estimating is essential, as the position will work with our large staff of construction cost estimators supporting federal Military Construction (MILCON) projects. The position also requires excellent writing and speaking skills as he/she will be working across the entire 110-person firm supporting federal, state, and local construction management in preparing research projects for high-visibility client assignments. Skills include organizing research plans, selecting appropriate staff with the right skills, providing interim project status, and providing economic insight to MSI staff in support of MSI projects.Essential Function:
  • Collect and normalize data and provide creative analysis in response to varied requests for construction economic information.
  • Compose various reports and other professional correspondence for client personnel or internal MSI staff.
  • Manage research, analysis, and report writing for major client projects.
  • Risk Analysis:
    • Collect data from diverse teams to conduct analysis,
    • Derive mitigation plans for risks and estimate their impacts on cost and schedule,
    • Work with lead estimator to generate reports in client format,
    • Derive findings using simulation tools (e.g. Crystal Ball©)
  • Quarterly Newsletter – MSI’s Chief Economist prepares a quarterly newsletter, “Today’s Construction Economy,” that is circulated to over 5000 clients, colleagues, and other interested parties.
    • Assist in research to generate content for the newsletter,
    • Draft and review to ensure a quality product.
  • Professional speaking and writing – MSI’s Chief Economist is a regular speaker at professional conferences such as SAME and CMMA. The position will be expected to write professional papers and speak at conferences.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or other related discipline.
  • Construction cost estimating experience.
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to identify relevant data requirements that lead to a quality technical solution.
  • Exposure to or fundamental knowledge of construction means and methods along with strong written and oral communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to anticipate upcoming problems and provide recommendations to preserve the project’s intent, schedule, and budget.
  • Software knowledge of MS Office suite.
