Purpose of Position:

The Community Schools Resource Coordinator is a salaried professional of the Family, Youth & Community Engagement Department of MMSD. The Coordinator will spend dedicated time at Central Office (approximately 20%), time in the community attending meetings on behalf of their designated school (approximately 10-15%), and approximately 65% of time at the school to attend school-based meetings, coordinate communication and programming within the Community School.

The purpose of the Community Schools Resource Coordinator is to advance the District’s Community School Initiative in the selected schools. Community Schools Resource Coordinators lead the work, in partnership with the school and community, to help bring programs/services and opportunities to the school building to impact children, youth and their families. Resource Coordinators engage stakeholders in the process of decision making and leverage as many assets that exist in the community.

Essential Functions: 

Central Office - Family Youth and Community Engagement Responsibilities 

● Create and develop contracts in accordance with MMSD contract policy guidelines to bring in desired programs that are in alignment with Community School priorities.

● Manage the Community School budget by using tracking tools at the school level and as provided by the department. Share with the Principal any updates on what funds are available for school activities. 

● Input data of monthly program participation, community stakeholder meetings and new opportunities in a monthly recording keeping system. 

● Submit payroll and appropriate expense documentation to the FYCE Clerical Assistant in a timely fashion.

● Attend regular team meetings with other Community School Resource Coordinators at Central Office to share best practices, problem solving and to complete monthly records.

● Attend and complete relevant training according to MMSD handbook and policy guidelines. 

● Work collaboratively with members of MMSD Communications Department, MSCR and other departments to help bring alignment for programming and public relations.

● Work collaboratively with the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools to ensure strong brand presence with community partners and telling the story of Community Schools with funders.

● Use the Community Schools Standards to help the school staff assess current state and growth opportunities in implementation.

● Help collect data and convene people for the purpose of evaluation of Community Schools.

School-Based Duties and Responsibilities 

● Provide leadership and direct planning for the Community School Committee, ensuring that families and community members participate, have voice, give input on decisions, and that the committee meets regularly (approximately 2 hours a week in communication with members for a monthly meeting). 

● Conduct and/or identify needs assessment and asset mapping for the school and surrounding community in order to inform the development and monitoring of the Community School Coordination Plan (approximately a 6 month process in the beginning of year 1 and then routinely evaluated in subsequent years).

● Develop a Community School Coordination Plan that shows which programs/services and community partners address the priority areas. Use this Coordination Plan to guide decision making (completed in the 1st year, updated annually). 

● Serve on the School Based Leadership team and garner provide input on the work that the Community School Committee is working on. When appropriate, serve on sub-committees to work on projects that will enhance the goals and integration of the School Improvement Plan and the Community School Coordination Plan (approximately 4-6 hours / month).

● If a Lead Partner is selected for the schools, work collaboratively and frequently with that organization and other partners such as Adopt-A-School Partners to ensure they know what the school needs and how they play a role (time will vary). 

● Work collaboratively with MMSD Grant Writer to write proposals and summary reports for grants as needed. Interact with media and community leaders with approval of the District/ Principal (time varies).

● Work collaboratively with the Parent Liaison to recruit families to serve on the Community School Committee and to align family outreach and recruitment to events/ activities at the school and hosted by Community School programming.

● Plan and attend Community Schools evening events and help staff at the school see connection to Community School opportunities. Uses outreach and organizing strategies to broadly reach community partners to the school (will represent nearly 80% of time at the school after the coordination plan has been developed).
