Assistant Attorney General

Litigation Section - St. Louis

The Missouri Attorney General's Office is committed to providing the highest quality legal representation to the six million Missourians who call our State home. We are looking for attorneys with excellent credentials interested in our Litigation Section.

The Litigation Section vigorously defends the State of Missouri from suit. This includes the defense of state officials, agencies and individual employees throughout all levels of government. The Section often leads the office's largest and most complex litigation and protects Missouri's laws from statutory or constitutional challenges.

Experienced attorneys appear in federal and state court, in various practice areas, such as class-actions, employment, personal injury, civil rights and other civil actions. The attorneys also effectively maneuver through all stages of litigation, developing pre-litigation strategies, directing discovery, taking a case to trial and persuasively writing and arguing appeals.

The Section represents many state agencies, as well as law enforcement, defending officers and troopers of the Highway Patrol, Department of Corrections, Capitol Police, and the Kansas City Metropolitan Police Department.

They also work closely with clients to manage and assess risk. Counseling and training provides clients valuable tools to better understand current liabilities and avoid future costs.

Preferred experience/skills:

  • Courtroom and trial experience
  • Handling pre-filing investigation, discovery, motion practice, and depositions
  • Drafting documents and correspondence
  • Resolving claims by settlement
  • State court familiarity
  • Commitment to public service
  • Excellent legal writing/ oral advocacy

Opportunities Offered:

  • Courtroom and jury trial experience
  • Handling litigation from case initiation through appeal
  • Practice in many of the 114 counties in the state at all levels
  • Practice in both state and federal courts
  • Defense of state agencies
  • Motion and appellate practice
  • Review of investigations

The AGO Advantage:

  • More experience and opportunities than a private law office
  • Immediately work on cases that affect policy and have a statewide impact
  • Attorneys are responsible for their own case load
  • Mentoring and guidance from experienced attorneys and colleagues
  • Regular interactions with clients, including state agency heads and general counsels.
  • Eligibility for federal student loan forgiveness
  • Annual conference and trainings, bar licensing fees, and parking provided. The office may approve additional training if needed.

Excellent health insurance plans available at very reasonable monthly premiums and state retirement pension and deferred compensation.

Candidates should be licensed to practice law in Missouri or eligible for a temporary license (Rule 8.06). Candidates with the most relevant experience and education will be considered for an interview.

Starting salary is $70,000 and increases based on years of experience up to $90,000, for six or more years of experience.
