Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is Hiring an Accounting Technician Near P7250, MN

The MPRB's Finance Department is accepting applications for a detail oriented Accounting Technician, who will be responsible for technical support to professional accounting staff, and other professional MPRB staff by performing accounting, budget, procurement, project costing and other related financial work. Interfaces and provides customer service support to customers, vendors, employees and supervisors daily to resolve accounting issues. Provide accounting services that meet the park and recreation needs of diverse communities and ensure race equity, gender inclusion and universal access.

  • Support professional accounting staff by analyzing and preparing accounting records and reports and acting as a liaison with customer departments.
  • Review financial transactions for coding errors, research root-cause issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions to eliminate or reduce future errors and inconsistencies.
  • Prepare journal entries for revenue and expense accounts, internal billing, deferred revenue, including researching discrepancies and making appropriate adjustments (Journal entries prepared directly into COMET (or other enterprise-wide financial management software) or via spreadsheet journal upload).
  • Process accounting and financial transactions in COMET.
  • Accurately balance payments and other accounting activities through review and reconciliation of various software systems (such as COMET, Cognos, ActiveNet, VueWorks, M5, Team Sideline, Max Ice)
  • Prepare cash and credit card deposits into COMET and bank.
  • Prepare and maintain records for assessments and collections.
  • Prepare month-end and year-end close accounting procedures.
  • Proactively resolve external, internal and interdepartmental issues creating effective and timely solutions, providing support as necessary and promptly informing appropriate individuals and groups of how the issues are resolved.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
Need to Have: 
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Increasingly responsible experience in accounting or bookkeeping, including working with automated financial systems and analyzing financial reports and accounting documents to verify accuracy. At least three (3) years.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or work experience may be considered.
Nice to Have:
  • Two years (2) of college training in accounting or related field. 

Skills Crucial to Success in This Role: 

  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and best practices of accounting and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and financial systems.
  • Ability to demonstrate an ability to interpret, understand and make decisions when applying policies and procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple duties at the same time and organize work to meet deadlines and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision; must set goals and priorities and work efficiently to accomplish critical objectives.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Selection Process:

  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered. 
  • We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
