Description

SUMMARY:

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design seeks applicants for part-time, temporary teaching assistant positions in our Continuing Education Summer Youth Programs. A variety of positions are available to work with elementary and high school students. This position is ideal for college students seeking a temporary summer position to gain experience in the classroom and learn from accomplished art educators.

The elementary art program introduces students to the world of art and ideas through week-long sessions that combine creative themes with fun and challenging art projects. Approximately 20 hours per week, June 13- August 6, 2024.

The high school art program provides students the chance to complete rigorous coursework while exploring Animation, Character Design, Drawing, Illustration, Painting and Photography. Approximately 30 hours per week, July 10-30, 2024. These positions must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.

DETAILS: This is a part time, non-benefited position expected to work 20-30 hours a week. This position reports to Youth & Teen Program Coordinator and is paid $15.57 hourly.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support and assistance to the instructor and the classroom, including student and supply needs.
  • Assist the Instructor in delivering curriculum. 
  • Assist the Instructor in teaching students technical skills.
  • Discuss class content, offer hands-on assistance, and explain project options to students.
  • Be a sounding board for the students’ ideas and encourage inventiveness and imagination.
  • Maintain good communication with instructors and staff.
  • Foster a positive and professional relationship with students.
  • Manage administrative duties such as: attendance; communication with families; maintain a clean classroom; determine supplies; printing; distributing course evaluations; assemble student art shows; and supporting equipment and tech needs..
  • Supervise younger students during their lunch/recess break and engage them in fun, inclusive activities. 
  • Endeavor to form positive relationships with students and foster a creative and supportive learning environment.
  • Represents MCAD’s vision, purpose, and values in day to day work and interactions with MCAD students, staff, faculty, and campus guests, as well as the greater community. 

Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma, or equivalent, required. Completed second or third year of college-level coursework, preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with youth is helpful, elementary age and/or high school students.
  • Experience in art making (young students) and Animation, Character Design, Drawing, Illustration, Painting, Photography (high school students).
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud is helpful, but not required for all positions.
  • Must be adaptable, enthusiastic, patient, self-motivated, communicative, and able to multitask 
  • Be on time, and model good student behavior for the students, stay focused on the material being taught in the class. Follow the same behavior rules as the students when on duty.
  • Must be able to move around the classroom to support students.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand, as well as being receptive to others’ perspectives. 
  • The ability to observe details.

ENVIRONMENT: This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms; and move boxes and supplies around campus weighing up to 25 pounds.
