POSITION: Special Services Supervisor

REPORTS TO: Special Services Executive Director/Director

SUPERVISES: Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel

DEPARTMENT:  Special Services

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

PAY GRADE:  5

NO. OF DAYS: 217

Education:

  • Certification/Licensure: Valid classroom teacher certificate and valid Special Education teacher certificate
  • T-TESS or ILD certified preferred (or eligible to attend certification training)
  • Bilingual certificate or ESL endorsement preferred
  • Master’s Degree preferred

Experience:

Minimum of three years successful special education teaching experience

Position Function/Purpose

To provide leadership to the Special Education program in support of the instructional

program.

Major Responsibilities

Instructional Management 

  1. Lead in setting instructional goals those broad statements which define the expectation of student achievement in the department.
  2. Work with the MISD Special Education Director in developing and refining instructional goals for the subject areas.
  3. Support the use of the PLC model in the collaboration and planning, writing, and implementation of IEP goals special education teachers.
  4. Function in the classroom as a resource person who models exemplary instruction and classroom management.
  5. Model innovative materials and services, and pilots programs needed to meet instructional goals.
  6. Serve as a resource person to provide instructional assistance and materials to teachers.
  7. Report periodically through the Special Education Director to the Division of Instruction Services on the achievement of program instruction goals and initiates program adjustments as needed.
  8. Prepare teachers for proper administration of student assessment instruments.
  9. Confer with both teachers and administrators regarding the analysis of test data and plans with them any needed alterations in the instructional program or practices.

Supervisory LeadershipDuties

  1. Supervise the instructional program and the performance of teachers in the department and accept specific supervisory duties as delegated by the Director.
  2. Utilize classroom visits for effective supervision of the department.
  3. In formal clinical supervision, set up a schedule for regular classroom visits and notify teachers in writing of these visits.
  4. Visit the classroom of each teacher in the department at least once each year.
  5. Confer at regular intervals with the Special Education Director regarding observations.
  6. Schedule meetings which have as their primary purpose instructional improvement and/or program
  7. Development.
  8. Aid in the preparation of professional development activities on both the campus and school district levels.

Organizational Leadership Duties

  1. Provide leadership in the selection of instructional materials. 

Administrative Leadership Duties

  1. Ensure the implementation of administrative regulations within the department.
  2. Give necessary assistance to substitute teachers serving the department.
  3. Participate in the selection and assignment of personnel as requested by the Special Education Director.

 Team Leadership Duties

  1. Integrate the work of the Special Education Department into the total instructional program of the school through consultation with the principal and other special education support personnel.
  2. Participate and serve on special committees at the campus and district levels.
  3. Confer with the Director regarding any needed changes for upgrading the classroom practices of the department in compliance with district policy.
  4. Work cooperatively with the total school staff in order to facilitate instructional programs.
  5. Work closely with teachers, principals, assistant principals, and counselors on matters of student discipline.signed personnel.
