GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Reporting to the Executive Director, Marketing and Communications, this position will develop a comprehensive communications strategy to position Middlesex College as a destination for students to receive a high-quality, affordable education, and as a worthwhile investment for stakeholders who want to impact the community.
Developing and implementing a strategy to fulfill that goal, the Associate Director, alongside the Executive Director, will be responsible for overseeing the Communications branch of the department of Marketing and Communications, which will include media relations, internal communications, Executive communications, the College’s external public website, and any crisis communications.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:
  • Develops and executes media relations plans by working closely with staff and campus community to identify relevant news stories from within the College.
  • Builds relationships with local, regional, and national reporters, and proactively pitches media on College news and stories to secure placement in local, state-wide, and regional media outlets.
  • Generates and manages a general media list and other lists tailored for topic of news.
  • Uses media monitoring software for regular evaluation of effectiveness of media relations plans.
  • Writes speeches, scripts, talking points, statements, and messaging documents for College leadership, and assists in editing and proofreading materials from various departments.
  • Oversees the web management team responsible for the College’s web presence, including the external public website and the College’s employee intranet.
  • Conducts website audits to evaluate current web effectiveness; develops process and governance documents to formalize website management.
  • Creates plans for improvement of the external public website in coordination with Executive Director and College leadership and develops implementation plan with web management team.
  • Oversees the master events calendar on InfoNet.
  • Assists in crisis communications to employees and the media, including through text alerts, e-mails, websites, and social media.
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop a content schedule and messaging for digital signage on campus.
  • Supports the College’s Event team to develop materials for College events, including Convocation and Commencement.
  • In coordination with the Executive Director, oversees budget for purchase of communications-related software and materials.
  • Selects, organizes, and supervises Communications staff and is responsible for their training and performance, including regular evaluations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree;
  • Five (5) years’ experience in public relations, communications or a related field;
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills; and
  • Supervisory experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in higher education, government, or the non-profit sector;
  • Knowledge and experience with Adobe Suite;
  • Proficient knowledge of content management systems (preferably WordPress) SEO, Google Analytics, Google AdWords;
  • Strong relationship-building skills and ability to balance many projects at once and meet tight deadlines; and
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work with a diverse population.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Talking 1: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity 1: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

SCHEDULE
: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some evenings and weekends.
