Mid-West Forge Corporation is Hiring an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist Near Cleveland, OH

Overview: The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of employees within a workplace, as well as maintaining compliance with environmental regulations. The EH&S Specialist suggests and follows through with changes to improve the safety and environment of the workplace by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and monitor safety programs, recommending improvements for health and safety within the facility.
  • Manage facility air, stormwater, wastewater, waste, and spill programs, including renewals, recordkeeping, and reporting.
  • Lead changes to environmental permits and programs related to operational modifications.
  • Lead and collaborate on investigations, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Respond to on-site emergencies and accidents, investigating on-the-job incidents and preparing detailed reports for both company and OSHA reporting.
  • Develop and conduct training for employees on required OSHA and environmental topics, as well as other environmental, health, and safety procedures.
  • Drive employee engagement through safety meetings and actively involving employees in safety initiatives.
  • Conduct audits, identify environmental, health, and safety hazards, and develop/implement corrective actions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert regarding Federal, State, Local, and corporate EH&S requirements.
  • Liaise with local emergency response agencies.
  • Ensure awareness of changes in the regulatory landscape and implement necessary changes for continual compliance.
  • Facilitate incident and/or compliance investigations in conjunction with peers, Human Resources, and the Leadership Team.
  • Work closely with site Human Resources to ensure effective implementation of training requirements and accurate/accessible reporting of training completion.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related field (may consider BS in Safety Management).
  • Experience minimum of 3 years managing safety in a related field.

Key Competencies

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to influence the organization to accomplish environmental and safety and health objectives and a demonstrated commitment to a participative work environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations.
  • Minimum 5 years of managing safety in a heavy manufacturing or related field.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving and analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient computer skills to include, MS Office and database management.
  • Must have ability to confidently provide direction to management with regard to safety and environmental situations.
  • Experience managing and improving an ISO 14001certified environment
  • First Responder/First Aid training or EMT preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts
  • Use carts, dollies, cranes and jacks to transport material if needed
  • Must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 40 lbs.
  • Climbing ladders and stairs to reach work at potential heights of 30 ft or more
  • Navigate narrow walkways, confined spaces and overhead mezzanines
  • Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations impacted by weather and machinery
  • Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in work spaces
  • Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards.
  • Comfortable working in confined work environments

Work Environment:

The Environmental Health & Safety Manager interacts with historic machinery throughout the facility which often involves proximity to heat, noise, debris, conveyance systems and other potentially dangerous equipment. The Safety Manager will encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation throughout the facility which can cause high levels of vibration and airborne disturbances. There are areas of paved and unpaved walkway, active shipping lanes and occasionally standing water to be cautious of.
