Working Title: Medical Assistant
Program: Medical Assisted Treatment
Pay Range: $26.48/hour- $29.20/hour
Location: This position will serve all three counties(Hood River, Wasco and Sherman County)
FTE:1.0(37.5 hours a week)
FSLA Status: Non- Exempt
Mid-Columbia Center for Living (MCCFL) is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) that specializes in providing services that are both trauma-informed and recovery-oriented to persons / consumers with mental illness and addictions. Trauma-informed care includes safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness and empowerment for both clients and staff. MCCFL serves Hood River, Wasco and Sherman Counties and utilizes a consumer-involved, consumer-engaged and consumer-driven model. MCCFL provides a whole-person care approach to adults and children to address both physical and mental health needs. MCCFL offers a variety of programs including a mobile crisis unit, intensive case management, ongoing counseling, community support, supported employment, jail diversion, hospital discharges, hearings and more.Classification General Statement: The Medical Assistant assists clients in acquiring services needed to achieve treatment goals, with an emphasis on coordination of services both in MCCFL programs and in partner agencies throughout the community. This position regularly interfaces with clients and service providers to ensure a smooth delivery of services in accordance with Oregon statutes and MCCFL policies and protocols. Job Specific Overview:This position is working with the MAT(Medication Assisted Treatment) team in Hood river and the Dalles. Someone with great organization skills and enjoys collaborating with both the team would thrive in this role. This position is responsible for coordinating care with clients and providers. This team works with some of our most vulnerable population of our community to help them get the medical supported care with dignity and respect.Essential Responsibilities of the Classification: The following list represents the essential responsibilities (functions) of the position. It does not, however, represent all of the duties the position may be asked to perform.
  1. Under the delegation of a licensed practitioner, delivers high quality care to assigned patients.
  2. Administers medications as directed by physician/ nurse practitioner.
  3. Greets, and rooms patients
  4. Maintains adequate inventory of medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies
  5. Maintain a welcoming and compassionate atmosphere for patients.
  6. Perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records.
  7. Prepare exam rooms and equipment for patient visits.
  8. Take patient vitals and medical history accurately and efficiently.
  9. Assist with procedures as directed by healthcare providers.
  10. Educate patients on health-related topics and provide resources for further information.
  11. Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  12. Maintain cleanliness and organization of exam rooms and common areas.
  13. Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and other team members.
  14. Adhere to all safety protocols and infection control measures.
  15. Collaborate with other medical professionals to coordinate patient care.
  16. Scribe for the provider.
  17. Provide emotional support and comfort to patients during appointments.
  18. Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care
  19. Perform medication management and medication verification for clients, under the direction of the provider.
Position Specific Essential Responsibilities:
  1.  Under direction of the provider, provides primary clinical, administrative and coordinative functions to a team of health professionals with clients participating in the mental health care-based Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for patients with substance use disorders.
  2. Performs care coordination, panel management and in-depth knowledge of plans of care to support patients and the care team.
  3. Provides primary coordinative functions related to the program, including implementation, analytics functions and processes that enable true and effective teamwork, as well as proactively gathering data, analyzing current processes, identifying steps for improvement, and developing processes to optimize team performance.
  4. Keeping an eye on the big picture of what is going on in their team at all times, chart scrubbing with the provider prior to appointments, communication with clients, and communication and coordination with other members of the mental health clinic.
Job Specifications Any eligible combination of education and experience that qualifies the applicant to meet criteria and demonstrates the ability to perform the position’s essential responsibilities. This might typically include:
  • High school Diploma or equivalent
  • Graduation from an accredited medical assisting program.
  • One year experience in a mental health clinic, healthcare related clinic, or hospital-based clinic setting.
  • Experience working with individuals who have severe and persistent mental illness, substance abuse disorder and/or developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • Experience working with the underserved populations– Uninsured, Medicaid, Medicare is preferred.
  • Experience providing coordinative program support is preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is preferred.
  • Must pass all criminal history check requirements as required by ORS 181.536-181.537 and in accordance with OAR 407-007-0200 to 407-007-0370.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon or Washington Driver’s license, maintain an acceptable driving record, and be insurable for client service purposes and for travel between business offices, meetings and/or trainings.
Other Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge: Knowledge of symptoms and challenges faced by people with mental illness; knowledge of modern medical assisting methods and practices; knowledge of assessment and referral processes and procedures; knowledge of medication management; knowledge of MCCFL-based and other community-based services; knowledge of mental health and medical assessment, treatment and service terminology; knowledge of treatment/service planning; knowledge of medical records maintenance including electronic health records systems.Skill: Skill in the use of clinical software systems; skill in the use of standard office software; skill in keyboarding. Ability: Ability to work under the general supervision of a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner. Ability to understand and effectively apply the concepts and practices of a trauma-informed philosophy in performing the work. Ability to work within strong professional ethics and rules of confidentiality to provide effective services to clients. Ability to scribe for the provider. Ability to effectively work with clients to encourage and facilitate engagement in the treatment process; ability to maintain a strong service orientation; ability to read and understand a service plan and to effectively coordinate identified services; ability to write and maintain timely and cogent notes, reports and other professional documents; ability to organize and execute work effectively under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; ability to work with grace and good humor under pressure and to meet multiple deadlines; ability to work cooperatively with other departments and service providers; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and within trauma-informed care guidelines; ability to establish and maintain harmonious work relationships with co-workers at all levels of the organization, consultants, contractors, community partners, and consumers.Leadership Received:This position works under the supervisory leadership of a Clinical Supervisor or the Nurse Care Supervisor. Leadership Exercised:This position is not responsible for providing supervisory leadership to any other classification.Physical Demands:While performing the essential duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use office equipment including computer and phone systems that require fine manipulation, grasping, typing, and reaching. The employee should possess a valid driver's license for vehicle travel between office locations in order complete job responsibilities and attend required meetings and/or trainings. The Medical Assistant must have the ability to quickly assess and respond to concerns related to interpersonal and environmental safety as well as client care. The employee may be required to sit or stand for several hours at a time, depending on environment and need. This position may occasionally be required to lift up to twenty (20) pounds, and to kneel, reach, bend or squat while in the office or in the community. Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in an office and outpatient clinic setting. Noise level is usually moderate, but occasionally may be exposed to loud noise such as raised voice levels and alarms. The employee may regularly travel between Hood River and The Dalles as needed for client services.
  • Universal Precautions and remaining alert to environment are critical to address the potential for violent behavior, safety concerns, biohazards, noise and contaminants.
  • This position is exposed to the everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as an office and medical clinic. Special attention is required for precautions for infection control.
