POSITION SUMMARY: The Resident Director (RD) is charged with developing a community that promotes engagement, learning, respect for diversity, and student success. The RD must be passionate about creating a safe, welcoming environment where all students feel supported, encouraged, challenged, and valued. The RD will assist with training, supervising, and evaluating Residential Assistant (RA) student staff members. Additionally, this position will support the planning and implementing programs related to the University's retention, persistence, academic success, and graduation goals. The RD is a purposefully different leader, modeling servant leadership to live out the University’s mission to develop Christlike disciples through higher education. This is a 12-month live-in position and will be considered essential personnel during some crises. We are actively recruiting both male and female resident director positions at this time.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with RAs to develop and implement programs that support students from diverse religious, cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds and enhance the residential experience
  • Identify opportunities to enhance campus life through programming, leadership training, and campus activities
  • Invest time visiting students, getting to know them on a personal level
  • Set a positive example of holistic personal development for students
  • Foster student integrity and development by giving spiritual, academic, and personal guidance
  • Support both current and prospective student events on campus
  • Serve as a partner in the student's total development by working with campus resources, such as Academic Affairs, Athletics, Campus Ministries, Career Services, Counseling Services, Facilities/Maintenance, Learning Resource Center, Student Services, and other offices
  • Assist students experiencing emotional, academic, physical, and/or interpersonal difficulties and refer them to campus resources when appropriate
  • Assist with students’ educational goals and academic needs by supporting understanding of policies, procedures, resources, and programs
  • Address behavior issues impacting individual/community rights and standards
  • Facilitate conflict/resolution between students in housing
  • Maintain office hours and respond to student/stakeholder needs through visibility and availability in the residence hall office
  • For non-urgent injuries, the RD is responsible for transporting the student to the emergency room, hospital, or doctor's office and immediately contacting the Director of Student Life. Incident reports must be filed for any medical incidents. CPR certification provided. A first-aid kit is provided for minor medical incidents to administer necessary treatment
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and developing Resident Assistants by helping with Fall and Spring Student Leadership Training and hosting weekly staff meetings.
  • Develop and maintain a vision for the RA staff that is communicable and encourages involvement in and ownership of the campus culture
  • Directly supervise and support 8-10 Resident Assistants.
  • Follow up on handbook violation reports or concern reports as necessary
  • Serve as a conduct hearing officer for students referred for minor violations of the Student Code of Conduct, Residential Life Policies, and other behavioral concerns; administer appropriate sanctions and/or interventions to effectively resolve disciplinary problems in consultation with the Director of Student Life, Conduct, and Safety
  • Conduct performance evaluations for Resident Assistants to determine development and performance needs, create action plans to address individual needs and in-service programs for group needs
  • Coordinate with the other Resident Directors in the daily operation of their residence hall, including building opening/closing, distribution and collection of keys, monitoring of room inventories and room changes, and follow-up on work orders
  • Open room doors when students have forgotten their keys
  • Work with the Student Affairs staff to determine housing arrangements each semester
  • Report and follow up on maintenance problems/requests in the residence halls
  • Collaborate with Facilities and Maintenance departments on the needs of the residents
  • Maintain Residence Life Budget
  • Serve in an on-call rotation for the entire residential population, including after-hours and some weekends/holidays
  • Work evenings and weekends as necessary to fulfill expectations of the position
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree in student development, higher education, counseling, or a related field is preferred. Experience in residential life and campus programming is preferred; Experience conducting student leadership training and program planning in a college environment is preferred.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret multiple instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to evaluate staff performance and provide necessary training for improvement.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Microsoft Office Suite, CRM software, Cloud-based dialers, Microsoft Internet Explorer software, and Google Suite (Email, Drives, Spreadsheets).
