The following position is being posted for the 2024-2025 school year.

DESCRIPTION: Social Worker – Meridian Public Schools

STARTING DATE: August 2024

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

SUPERVISOR: Superintendent and/or Special Education Supervisor

DISTRICT-WIDE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Meridian Public Schools, in partnership with parents, students, businesses and the community, are committed to and responsible for ensuring the highest level of academic achievement and career planning for all students, the highest performing organizational structure at all levels, and a safe and effective learning environment for all students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be knowledgeable of best practices with regard to implementing the problem-solving model for improving student achievement
  • Be knowledgeable of interventions and progress monitoring techniques for students demonstrating academic, social-emotional and behavioral needs
  • Ability to administer and interpret tests which may assess intelligence, behavioral, psychological, and adaptive levels of functioning
  • Capacity to interview, consult, and counsel school personnel, parents, students and other professionals
  • Participate as a member of multidisciplinary evaluation and manifestation determination teams
  • Serve as a multidisciplinary evaluation team coordinator in appropriate situations
  • Participate in Individual Educational Program Team meetings
  • Communicate special education evaluation results in a clear and understandable manner to parents, school professionals, and students
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate student records and reports consistent with State and Federal Law.
  • Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities not in conflict with Board policy, conditions of employment, and as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor and/or Superintendent
  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations
  • Perform certain pastoral duties including but not limited to student support, counseling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required Reasonable accommodations must be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Be licensed and have a Master’s Degree or higher in Social Work from an accredited institution.
  • Full or preliminary certification as a Michigan School Social Worker or the ability to attain certification as a Michigan School Social Worker
  • Experience working with general education students and students diagnosed with various types of disabilities
  • Support students’ ability to learn and teachers’ ability to teach through consultation, academic intervention, and/or behavioral intervention within proper training limitations
  • Participate as an active and collaborative team member to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for students and staff
  • Organize time, energy, and workload to complete work-related assignments with consideration of priorities among various responsibilities in order to meet timelines. Complete timely and accurate written reports
  • Be knowledgeable of local, state and federal laws and regulations affecting special education.
  • Preferred knowledge of Positive Behavior Supports and CPI strategies
  • Preferred knowledge of multi-tiered systems of support and effective instructional strategies for students with disabilities
  • Demonstrate professional maturity and high levels of discretion, integrity and organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to word process, utilize software applications and use electronic mail.
  • Ability to lift and carry assessment tools
  • Ability to work successfully with students, parents, staff, community and advocacy groups
  • Assume responsibility to transport self to the assigned worksite(s) and maintain regular, reliable and predictable attendance

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. Moderate concentration/intensity, which includes prolonged mental effort with limited opportunity for breaks. Average memory is needed, considering the amount of time and type of information. A moderate level of complexity for decision making and average time pressure of decision making.

The employee must have the ability to move/lift up to 25 pounds. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job includes close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
