Description

Miami Country Day School is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative educator to join our team as an Upper School Humanities Teacher/GIEB Coordinator starting August 2024. While primarily focused on History, candidates should embrace humanities and aim to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum, with a preference for those familiar with the Understanding by Design framework.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Upper School Humanities Teacher/GIEB Coordinator will collaborate with a team to design and implement curriculum using the Understanding by Design framework. Responsibilities include teaching five sections of history, serving as an academic advisor, and actively engaging in the Humanities Department and Upper School community. Additionally, this role involves coordinating advocacy groups, attending divisional meetings to ensure continuity, participating in diversity, equity, and belonging programming, delivering instruction on DEB courses, facilitating GIEB micro-courses, and serving as an Upper School advisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & TASKS:

  • Design and deliver instructional units and lessons using the UbD framework.
  • Establish clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Utilize technology effectively to support instruction.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide feedback.
  • Manage classroom behavior and enforce norms.
  • Participate in department, school, and parent meetings.
  • Communicate regularly with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Engage in professional development and contribute to the school community.

GIEB Duties:

  • Develop rapport and meet regularly with student advocacy groups.
  • Attend and contribute to divisional meetings to ensure continuity.
  • Collaborates with sponsors, advocacy groups, and the GIEB office on diversity, equity, and belonging programming.
  • Deliver instruction of DEB courses and facilitate GIEB micro-courses.
  • Participates in meetings that involves student issues focused on diversity, equity, and belonging. 

Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Government, Economics, Education, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years teaching experience, preferably in Upper School and Independent School settings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Possesses a firm understanding of current topics of diversity, equity, and belonging.
  • Ability to use technology to promote engaging discussions and work around DEB.
  • Commitment to professional growth and the school's mission.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment.
