Summary:

The major purpose of the Detective Sergeant is to provide front line supervision to members of the Investigative Services Bureau and oversee all police investigations within the MTA Police service area.

Responsibilities:

MTA Police Detective Sergeants supervise MTA Police Detectives within the Detective Sergeants command and/or region. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Monitor and supervise all criminal and non-criminal investigations and counter terrorism assignments relating to MTA Agencies to include MTA H/Q, Metro North, LIRR, and SIRT.
  • Ensure Detective case reports are assigned, investigated, recorded, and closed as appropriate.
  • Review and assist Detectives with investigations and ensure information sharing is being implemented with outside agencies.
  • Provide necessary and timely information to the Bureau Commanding Officer/Executive Officer of crime patterns, significant events, and/or case updates.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to Detectives while maintaining a close working relationship with patrol and special operations personnel to include the District/Unit Commanding Officer(s).
  • Ensure local conditions and intelligence information is being shared.
  • Prepare various reports, forms, logs, and support operations that the department may coordinate with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Record, update, monitor, and approve Detective payroll, deployment, scheduling, case databases, time off requests, and discretionary training requests.
  • Work toward lowering index and uniform crime trends
  • Serve as a liaison with outside local, state, and federal law enforcement and emergency response agencies.
  • Must be able to work any day of the week, during any period and often outdoors during inclement weather. Other accountabilities include:
  • Be on call and travel within the MTA Police service area.
  • Physical ability to deal with emergencies and take on a supervisory role during critical incidents.
  • Make quick and sound judgements during emergency situations.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of New York and Connecticut law/statutes.
  • Access databases from other law enforcement entities

MTA Detective Sergeants are expected to follow the MTAPD policies and procedures and follow protocol set out in the collective bargaining agreements and by MTA.

Qualifications:

Candidates, at minimum, must meet the following qualifications:

  • Must be promotion eligible and on an active MTAPD Sergeant promotional list or be an MTA Police Sergeant.
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong leadership, multi-tasking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of New York State and Connecticut criminal statutes and other relevant laws.
  • Must have experience in the Incident Command (ICS) System
  • Must be flexible to work various tours, various work locations, and be will willing to be "on call" based on the needs of the department.
  • Must have the ability to travel from residence to incidents within the MTA PO service area in a reasonable time will be taken into consideration.

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Current MTA Detective with at least 1-year criminal investigative experience
  • Has attended and successfully completed a Criminal Investigation Course.
  • Prior investigative experience either in the MTA Police Detective Division, Special Investigations Division, Applicant Investigations Unit, Cyber Crimes Unit (CCU), or Interagency Counterterrorism Task Force (ICTF) preferred.
  • For appointment to the CCU, experience in cyber security, digital forensic investigation, computer crimes, digital surveillance, drone operation.
  • For appointment to Executive Protection- experience or training in dignitary protection.

Requirements

The position requires that the Detective Sergeant:

  • Be able to work with limited supervision and respond to critical events while coordinating investigative efforts with patrol, members of the Detective Division, emergency medical personnel, medical examiner's office, and MTA Agencies.
  • Be cooperative with other law enforcement agencies throughout New York, Connecticut, and the country including but not limited to Local, State, and Federal agencies.
  • Be able to manage highly stressful and complicated criminal/non-criminal cases and dealing with victims, witnesses, perpetrators, attorneys, and the like.
  • Ensure the proper course of justice with the legal time frames (statutes of limitations) of the law.
  • Work within the frames of the department's budget and allowances as directed by the commanding officer or higher.
  • Travel for training or investigative purposes.

Note that the selected applicant may be offered assignment to the Detective Division, Special Investigations Division/Special Conditions Unit, ICTF, Executive Protection (EP) and/or CCU.
