Description

Methodist University seeks a dynamic, innovative, forward-thinking individual to serve as the inaugural Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development for its new School of Medicine that has been established in partnership with Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville, NC. The School of Medicine is an applicant program with the LCME. Serving as a key member of the school’s leadership team, this individual will provide executive leadership for faculty development programs and for the medical school’s administration of faculty appointments and promotions, including oversight of all applicable policies that govern faculty advancement and the associated structure of faculty administration. This individual will facilitate recruitment, retention and advancement of the medical school’s academic workforce that promotes excellence. The successful candidate will facilitate and oversee the creation and implementation of innovative programs for faculty orientation and career development, encouraging a culture of equity, excellence, and discovery. Responsibilities:

  • Furthers the mission, vision, and goals of the College of Medicine and Methodist University
  • Serves as an ambassador for the College, the University, and the Health System
  • Serving as a key member of the school’s leadership team, provide executive leadership over school-wide administration of faculty appointments and promotions, including oversight of all applicable policies that govern faculty advancement and the associated structure of faculty administration.
  • Facilitate recruitment, retention and advancement of an academic workforce that promotes excellence.
    • The successful candidate will facilitate and oversee the creation and implementation of innovative programs for faculty orientation and career development, encouraging a culture of equity, excellence, and discovery.
    • Serve as the primary liaison between School of Medicine, departments, and faculty, identifying the resources, priorities, and infrastructure necessary to advance faculty development efforts and opportunities.
    • Develop and continuously refine strategies for enhancing faculty engagement at the School of Medicine, designing systems to support well-being.
    • Assess, develop, and continuously improve programs for leadership training and faculty development, evaluating best practices and developing plans that scale across the School of Medicine and its education, research, and clinical care missions.
  • Faculty Development
    • In conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, create an environment and programs to support CFVH’s DEI goals.
    • Develop a strategic plan for faculty development that aligns with the School of Medicine's mission, vision, and strategic objectives.
    • Design, implement and evaluate faculty development programs that enhance the expertise of educators in the health professions, in domains including but not limited to teaching, assessment, educational research, scholarship, technology, curriculum design, leadership and accreditation.
    • Ensure a comprehensive strategy to ensure all core educators, as well as the multitude of faculty and non-faculty physicians who meet medical students in the clinical setting have the necessary teaching skills to provide a quality educational experience to MCFV students.
    • Foster a community of practice among health professions educators that is supportive and encourages sharing of ideas.
    • Promote equity, diversity and inclusion through faculty development offerings.
  • Work with the Associate Dean for Research in developing a research agenda for the medical school .
  • Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and office of medical education to ensure adequate faculty development resources for scholarly activity.
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of faculty teaching and make data-driven improvements.
  • Oversee programs to recognize and reward outstanding teaching, as well as educational research and scholarship.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the School of Medicine, departments, and faculty, identifying the resources, priorities, and infrastructure necessary to advance faculty development efforts and opportunities.
  • Work with local CME accreditors to ensure appropriate recognition for programs that may qualify as CME.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with the LCME accreditation standards surrounding faculty engagement in the MD educational program.
  • Oversee a process to collect, capture and report accurate faculty data.
  • Orient new faculty on policies, promotion, career advancement, faculty evaluation and professional development.
  • Work with Faculty Appointment and Promotions committee to ensure faculty appointments/promotions align with criteria.
  • Participate in faculty counseling and grievance and appeals processes.

Qualifications


Experience:

Minimum experience:

  • 5 years or more of faculty development/administrative/leadership experience at an LCME accredited medical school or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of workplace opportunities and challenges in academic medicine, including professional development and promotion.
  • Faculty affairs/development program planning
  • Familiarity with LCME accreditation standards

Preferred experience:

  • Track record of effective faculty mentoring in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of faculty affairs/faculty development principles/accreditation standards and medical school administrative processes.
  • Faculty appointment or eligibility for appointment in the School of Medicine at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Experience with collaborative, multi-disciplinary, multi-professional health care, educational, and research teams.
  • Exceptional planning, organizational, program development and implementation skills.
  • Effective communication skills; ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
